This is my first time authering a dvd. I have 26 divx AVIs that I want to burn to a video dvd. However using nerovision express it can only fit 21 of them onto one disc, even with it's built in compession. Is there other software out here (preferably free) that will do this for me?

Your problem is that you aren't compressing the divx's when you put them on dvd, you're expanding them. Divx is based on mpeg-4, which allows better compression than mpeg-2, which is the dvd standard. That's why you're running out of space. What you have to do is convert your divx files to dvd compliant mpeg-2 files and then author and burn your dvd. I'll warn you up front, that's not as easy as it sounds. Do a forum search for "convert divx to dvd" and you'll see what I mean. On the bright side, most (if not all) the tools you need are free.

    Good luck!

Ok, thanks. I went ahead and tired something while waiting for a response. I used nerovision to write this oversized dvd to a file instead of dvd media. This is running right now at work while I am home. I planned to take this set of files which I imagine are much like a standard dvd rip and shrink them with dvdshrink. Any thoughts?

Yes. What resolution are your avi files? How many minutes in total?

The bitrate determines the amount of minutes on a disk. Bitrate also needs to be matched to the resolution of your mpegs which should be close to the resolution of your avi's.

Having said that you're far better off using a proper mpeg encoder like TMPGEnc instead of Nero. At least in TMPGEnc you can vary the resolution and bitrate.

Well it apparently worked. I couldn't shrink it with dvdshirk (gave some error) but did with clonedvd. Burned perfectly and I'm watching it now.

If anyone is interested in doing this themselves it's the first 25 episodes of red vs. blue http://www.redvsblue.com (it's a free d/l so there are no copyright violations) If anyone hasn't seen the series check it out. It's VERY funny!
