  3. Just hope we get it, she's already planning on what to put in each room. It will break her heart (and my head) if we don't get it.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
I bought my first house in 1997 for £57k and it was the second we say.
I/we loved it from day one and we're already planning a big extension, although my wife gave up work last week for the next three years (new baby due March 04) so its brown trouser time for a while
Even though you're down south that's about what I'd expect to pay up here in Yoekshire.
A house two doors up went for £160k last week and doesn't have the 20' kitchen mine does (mine just a three bed semi).
Could be worse, I could live in SanFran
Prices are absolute madness and only benefit those who sell up and live in a tent
There's a couple of guys in my office who are thinking of buying together because they can't afford to buy on their own.
Glad I wasn't born five years later than I was, never thought I'd say that.

  5. Yeah indeed, silly prices round here. We bought our flat for 53k 4 years ago, it is on the market for 125k.

I was always planning to emmigrate so we have been living well below our means for years saving up.

But I just got a promotion so we thought we would buy a bigger place as our place is like a shoe box.

Not a bad new house for a 23 year old who never went to uni. Eat that Mr Baker (my old headmaster).

  6. Oddly enough, I have just put down the deposit on my first house this morning. Its a brand new semi-detached 3 bed house and is going for £68,500. Here's an artists impression of the finished design .... http://www.halifaxhomefinder.co.uk/HxHfDetails.asp?ref=84650640000 it's the half on the left I'm buying. It's quite small, but as I'm single, it'll do me alright, and it has good views and isn't blocked by others in the development.

  7. Nice place, bit of a coincidence Russ we have just bought a new place also. We have been pretty lucky so far, sold our place the day after it had gone on the market and had an offer accepted on our new place just a few days later. Just hope everything else goes as smoothly. I am preparing myself for some serious stress.

    The house is here

This is our current houseDoubled in price in four years, but I did do a hell of a lot of work to it. Its price is limited by the fact that it is an ex council house.

  9. Everyone sems to be moving

At least prices have not got too silly in Norther Ireland energy80s. A place like that would be more than double that price here.

    I don't think I'll be.
I have a garage attached which I plan to make a room from, and add a 4rth bedroom above with onsuite and study at the back.
I'm then gonna build a garage on the end (we're lucky we have a space on the end).
I reckon I'll have it done for £25-30k and couldn't find anything as big (even a semi-det) for £30k more than my house is currently worth
I'm lucky I love where I live though

Thanks Will, we went to see about a dozen houses and this one was by far the best, managed to haggle down to £196K as well
Prices up your way have boomed in the last year or so have'nt they so there is not the gap in prices between the north and south there once was ?

    Yeah, it's insane here.
I'm lucky enough to live in a really nice part of Leeds, semi-rural almost and the prices here are insane compared with some parts of Leeds.I'm even luckier to have bought when I did.
I moved in 2 May 97, same day as Tony (Blair) moved into his new house
Saying that my poll tax (yes, I still call it that) has gone up 80% in that period
Mine is a conventional three bed semi, nothing special, and worth nothing like its market value.
Like I say, I either move to another part of Leeds or I extend, and I prefer the altter.

  14. All nice houses above guys.

From the pictures my parents bought back from their trip to Europe I thought you all lived in stuffy little flats adorned with royal family memorabilia.

Coincidentally, we are selling our house at the moment, well it's basically sold. Pictures here.

  18. Thanks, sad to see it go as I've spent most of my childhood there.

Oh well, always good to start new things, plus I'll only be at the new house for a year or two before I move out.

  22. My parents were actually going to do this (a house swap for a month) with some friends of ours in the states about 5 years ago but for some reason it never happened.

Can't wait to get the new house built. Right across from a pub/club. Will come in handy for getting drunk and staggering home.

  24. Still deciding on what they are going to do, whether to get an architect to design it or build using an existing plan or the last and most likely option, personlise an existing plan with the help of an architect.

They don't want to spend too much money for fear of over capitalising.

  25. Those English houses of yours look really different from American homes.

    Here's mine:

It's pretty old, but nevertheless worth >$300K. New houses around here are getting massive (hey, thats American for you).

I'll post a pic of what a new houses looks like later.

Boy some really nice houses there....now i really feel left out, because im renting . And I know nothing about house buying either, so im at quite a loss. If I was capable of buying a house, I would buy one in a wooded area where there are alot of trees surrounding my house and I am not close to any neighbors. I like a quiet peaceful existence. But unfortunately buying a house is so difficult and nothing but endless red tape in a jungle filled with pits and bear traps that I fear I may never be able to buy a house in my lifetime. So much for life's dreams eh?

  29. If you don't mind me asking what city/state do you live in g_shocker182?

Just curious because your house typifies what I think a normal american house would look like yet on my trip over to the US in 2000 in all the states we travelled to I didn't see a single house that resembled yours.
