  1. Has there been any info/speculation regarding dual layer media availability and pricing? I'm thinking that dual layered disks are going to be quite expensive, around $10+ apiece, because these disks will enable perfect 1:1 backups of DVD movies, and the media will be priced around the same as a pressed-disk movie to discourage piracy. Any thoughts or more info?

That would be Great for the Movie Studios,
and terrible for the DL Discs manufacturers.

If the price is the same as a pressed disc, then you might as well buy another retail copy as your backup.

The biggest demand for these discs comes from people who are backing up DVD-9 movies. If the economics of it aren't reasonably cheaper than buying another copy of the movie, those discs will not sell.

I imagine that the price would be a little more than two single layer DVD-R. Maybe $5 or so.

When the original blanks came out, they were priced quite high, because there were no alternatives. It was there way, or the hi-way. Now dual layer discs have to compete with single layer. Don't like DL prices? Just use single layer discs. It's what we have been doing for a while already, and it works fine.

DL discs would be *nice*, but they aren't essential. So that pressure should hopefully force the prices to be reasonable/competitive.

  3. The discs arent manufactured by the movie industry, and their pricing will have nothing to do with trying to stop piracy. Although the dual layer DVD's will help with DVD9 backups, they will also help greatly with data backup. You should be able to backup your entire hard drive with just a few dual layerd discs.

I would expect them to start around $5, then start to creep down and eventually phase out single layered discs.

    Well, maybe for some.

I have 143 GB's of data on my C: drive, plus several hundred GB's of movies and music and such on my other drives.

    No kiddin, Kool-aide,

As soon as DVD burning becomes practical, Hard drive sizes are way past the point of backing up being non-trivial. (Take me 10 DVD-9 discs... *shudders*)

I'd hessitate to put too much emphasis on DL discs for those interested in data backup. At least, enough to suffer comparatively higher prices than just using 2 SL discs. Would there really be enough people willing to pay a significantly higher price per MB of storage?
