  1. To those in the group --

For editing, obviously -- which is better, Vegas or Premiere Pro, which is more stable and has the best bang for the buck...

    Thanks -

    they are both very good.

for stability and audio support , vegas.

    for more features - vegas.

    for nested timelines - adobe.

if you have edited with adobe before -- you may prefer the adobe GUI ..
otherwise vegas , IMO , is a better deal ...

but really , as they are both good -- best to download trial of each and try for yourself ...

  3. I've tried both and think that Vegas is the best...it's just easier to learn.

  4. I have to agree about Premiere Pro for the nested timelines, and also for singletrack editing. I know people complain about it having a steep learning curve, but it isn't any more than any other serious editing program. Plus, the Mainconcept encoder included with Premiere is one of the best IMO.

I agree that Vegas could use updated MC encoder. Otherwise it is so intuitive that it is hard to beat (no cryptic language and convoluted menus). Pure joy to use.

I haven't used Premiere since v5, I found it to be powerful and feature-rich, but not comfortable and sometimes downright confusing.

Since I switched to Vegas 4, I find I am much more productive - the workflow makes more sense, the tools make more sense, and things that took me 2 hours to do in Premiere (mostly with the manual in my hand, scratching my head and wondering what I'm doing wrong) take me about 15 minutes in Vegas (with only 2 or 3 minutes of manual consult and head scratching...)

now if only Vegas could accept Adobe plugins, without needing Boris...

Did I hear something about Sony discontinuing new releases of Vegas?

  8. I haven't heard that. In fact, Vegas 5 seems to be on the horizon (although there has been no official press release about new features, etc.)

Another great thing about Vegas is the way it handles 24p. I forgot to mention that... (and it's worth mentioning because it seems to be the "fad" at this time)

no way ! Sony has been promoting the heck out it -- MAJOR exposure at trade shows and the like /// - they have also invested heavy into the next version - which will become the defacto high end app - replacing the current rather lame pro sony editing software (for IMX etc) .

its a very profitable division -- as vegas is the best selling NLE in its market , and it has be BEST reputation for stability and ease of use (which greatly reduces customeer support requirements/expenses)

they have great forums on thier web site as well as at creativecow and DMM for additional support ..

there are several new plug-ins that just came out for it (including more HD editing features than it already did and also BORIS Fx)

Both Premeire pro & Vegas are excellent video editing solutions.

Vegas+DVD is a really complete solution that will take yo from DV to DVD. Sony has repositioned Vegas a bit higher end - but this is a good thing. it means plenty of developement and marketing is coming.

With Premiere Pro (and Encore DVD) Adobe has re-established themselves as the market leader. You can get hardware cards that add additional functionaluty to Premeire Pro. The RTX100 not only adds real-time analog & DV output, but real-time MPEG2 export fromt eh timeline. So a 1 hour video takes one hour to export.

Here are links to 2 very useful articles on our website:
