I have an Xvid file with ac3 sound which I have tried to convert with headache, Besweet & Goldwave seems too complicated. I saved the direct streams with virtual dub 1 for audio the other for video and opened headache to convert it from ac3 to wav/mp3 and it says chunk or something not quite sure??
Secondly even when I do accomplish the above, my main question is how do I merge the audio/video into one? Any ideas plse let me know thanks

You can only join the files if they both use the exact same frame rate, audio type & bitrate, video codec & bitrate, and resolution. If your files meet those criteria than open video 1 with Virtualdub and select "Direct Stream Copy". Then go to file and select "Append AVI Segment"(on some versions it's Append AVI), select video 2, and finally go to file again and "Save As AVI".

There are some other movie joiners available that can force a merge for non-matching clips but the resulting file will probably be unplayable.

  3. I think he means remux the video and audio back together not join avi's.

I use Virtualdub_Ac3. Open the avi and Direct Stream Copy .Open the AC3 under Audio and direct stream copy. save as new avi.

That's not that what I meant? I wanted to merge/multiplex the video and audio once I've converted the audio from ac3 to wav/mp3. Just like you would multiplex a mpeg file using tmpgenc basically. Surely there must be some kind of tool to do that? Thanks for getting back to me, it doesn't matter if u don't know the answer I'm sure I'll find out somehow.

feenix had it. Use Virtualdub, load the video, under audio> wav audio and select your audio track, set both audio and video to direct stream copy, save avi.

Yes that's correct I meant remuxing but I still don't know how I am supposed to go about it with virtualdub ac3 does it have a code included or something? Do you just save the whole file as an avi? Do u first have to use some sof avi tool i.e headache or besweet first and then go to the ac3 audio in virtualdub to retrieve it having appended the video? Plse let me know thanks?

You could always just download the thing and have a go at it...

Well thanks feenix and Zippy for your help. Before I got to read your last replies I finally cracked it after several hours. I actually thought that somehow the ac3 codec was in the virtualdub and that I didn't even have to extract the audio. Initialy I couldn't get HeadAche to work then realised that by saving the file with an .ac3 suffix this allowed me then use HeadAche to convert it to an intermediate file which with ciller ac3 tool I was able to convert into a wav file then using any virtualdub I could then retrieve the wav file under audio and merge it with the audio. The only problem now is that now I have joined the files with virtualdub it starts off well then the audio goes out of sync, it's because they are split. The only way I have found to resolve this is not to join them. Unless there is some tool that fixes the synching. But again thanks alot for your patience. God there is so much to learn I think I need a book on it all :P
