  1. I'm new to the DVDR world and I just installed a Pioneer DVR-107D.
The DVD's that I bought (generic ) will record Data ok but not VCD's SVCD's nor DVD's. I'm using Nero v6.3.1.6.. What media will work the best for this recorder especially for authoring video movies etc...

    Thanks

Welcome to world of DVD burning. If you want to record VCD's & SVCD's you don't use blank DVD media, you need to use a blank CD-R for those formats. Use dvd media that is recommended by Pioneer. Maxell, Imation, Verbatim, Ritek, Fuji & Pioneer brands are great to use. I would suggest you stay away from Memorex dvd media if it's manufactured by CMC. For some the Memorex will not work on some brands of burners. Check out the Pioneer forum at cdfreaks.com.

I would suggest you read some of the guides posted in this forum site. Lots of variables in authoring and burning dvds. You can use a program called DVDINFO PRO to identify who exactly manufactures the blank discs. Some Imation brands are manufactured by Ricoh, Verbatim made by Ritek or Mitsubishi. You may check lordsmurfs website called www.NoMoreCoasters.com He has a listing of dvd media and who manufactures them. He has a good guide to use for video stuff and dvd burning.

You might as well be asking Ray Charles to pickout the red M & Ms.

DVD media is a highly debated issue.

I personally prefer the RitekG04 media...it's not as cheap as the Princo's or some other off the shelf brands that you can get 1000 DVD-Rs for $.05. But for ME anyway having the best compatibility to the widest variety of DVD players is most important.

It basically boils down to what you need. If you need DVD-R media that will play in your own player then, just try them until you find one that it likes. If you need media that will play other people's players then I suggest you buy higher quality media.
