Does anyone know if the home version also supports file encryption?
Also are there any limitations on file or volume size that can be encrypted?
Lastly, do both VirtualDub and TMPGEnc work under XP without any problems? TIA

OK, I'll give my humble opinion...
I am sure that the Home version does not support file encryption, but I dont know about any limit on size. I would have to guess that the maximum file size that you can encrypt, would be the maximum file size for the filesystem. However I could be wrong, its just logical that this would be.
I am sure that if Vdub and TMPGEnc didnt work OK, then they will get a compatible version out very soon.
Personally, I would buy XP Pro as it offers a LOT more. MP support for a start; it would be handy if you wanted to upgrade to dual CPUs one day. It offers far more flexibility than the Home version and for a user like you, I would think the Pro version was more suitable. I have read many reviews of XP and have come to the conclusion that I will buy (copy) XP Pro when I have the chance. I dont know for sure but, I *THINK* that there is no product activation for the Pro version either. Dont quote me on that though...

Thanks. I'm leaning towards XP mainly to get past the 4GB ceiling and see no point in "upgrading" to NT or 2000 when soon there will be a new kid on the block.
I had ME installed for a couple days, then got rid of it. That wasn't a upgrade, seemed like downgrade. -

LOL!!! -
I don't really know the differences between home and pro. I use pro and it works great, both tmpgenc and virtualdub have worked fine for me.
Also there is something I noted with XP, well at least the pro version and that is you can click properties on an exe and there is a compability tab where you can select compability with a previous operating system. I don't know how well this feature works, but I have noted it.
have a great day.

I don't think you can do a RAID on the home edition, RAID would be nice as a safeguard.

raid arrays are set up in the raid bios... so that is taken care of before the OS even loads... so raid will work on any OS unless your raid manufacturer says somethin about maybe a compatibility issue or somethin weird like that. -
Well, for me, in RC2 RAID didn't work right yet, so the hardrives that were on the RAID channels got wiped out... But now I am on the Devils0wn release of Professional and the RAID works again with the latest Windows 2000 drivers.

can someone explain how the remote desktop works on Windows XP Pro?
I only dream in black & white...
MSN: paschendale@gmail.com -
Do you mean what it is how a step by step guide?
If you want to know what...
It allows you to control your computer from a remote location. You log into your computer from another computer on a network (mainly the Internet), and then can control it just as though you were at your actual computer - desktop and all.
-
But does that mean that the computer you want to log on has to be on the internet? And will it work any good on a 56kbs?

On the internet? No... but you do have to be able to connect to it somehow (Hence "remote" before desktop, hehe).
I dont know about the speed on 56K, it depends on what you are doing: The commands you send are being executed by the remote computer, so unless you are sending/recieving a lot of data or putting a heavy work load on it then it should be OK. -
Biggest difference I can think of is that Professional edition/Corporate doesn't require activation. Which makes sense in a business environment - would be hell for network people to have to activate each installation/licence.
Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Professional still requires activation, especially if you buy single oem or retail version.. you probably meant when you buy a bunch of XP Pro licenses as in corporate networks, then no, you activate once..

Just a note on RAID
http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/01q3/010906/index.html
W2K supports "SOFTWARE" raid - XP most likely will also.
Was gonna switch to XP but the crap won't support ISA and i'll really miss my 14.4 modem

"Product Activation is included in Windows XP Home Edition only"
What microsft have to say about Activation
