  1. I am a newbie. I own a P3 1 Ghz with 512 MB RAM and a 120 GB HD. I use XP Pro. I want to buy a NEC 2500 DVD writer.

A friend is telling me that my CPU is not fast enough and that ripping will take forever. He says it could take up to 2 hours to rip a DVD.

How long do you think I should need to rip a DVD?

How long do you think I should need to write a DVD?

It's fast enough. Ignore your friend and get your burner. A slower PC will take longer to encode a video file, but burning and ripping aren't as CPU dependent. The speed of the rip and the speed of the write are more dependent on the drives you are using. A seperate DVD ROM will usually rip faster than a burner. Some burners you can firmware flash and change the rip speed. Writing DVD speed is mostly dependent on the burner.

  3. What does encode mean? What is the difference between encode and rip?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am an absolute newbie and do not really know what I am talking about.
