224 is insufficient for 5.1 ... that's intended as a 2/0 bitrate ... tripling the speaker set reduces the quality to 1/3rd of original ... that probably won't sound too good ... for most software 384k is the minimum allowed for a 5.1 surround stream

I cant agree - I have 224 5.1 from 448 (and 384) 5.1 and it sounds ok, however I suspect its like video - all in the eye of the beholder (or ear in this case!). I don't have Dolby Dig. just Pro Logic and am very happy, I'm not a very discerning listener. Your standards may be (and probably are) much higher, but please try to give a balanced view for our posters (no offence meant).

Nice one, didn't realise the DD2.0 stuff or even think about the tripling of speaker numbers - fair point.

    Keep up the good work!

  7. You're also compressing an already compressed format which will degrade the sound. The differance in video bitrate that you save would be negligable ex:2 hr movie@448kbps=4600kbps vs. 224kbps=4800kbps.
