  1. I have a panasonic E30. I am recording something in flex mode for 2:45. I have done this in the past without a problem, but on this clip, it seems to be frocing it to 352x480. Everything else is 704x480. I am trying to cut a bunch of clips from various DVDs I have made and compile them into one.

Is there a way to ensure it will always be 704?

    Thanks in advance.

    Morning,

I'm waiting to get home today to unpack my new e50 but I believe that there is an option in one of the Pannys menus for fixed or variable, this relates to the frame size. Set this to fixed and it wont lower the resolution part way through a recording, (although you should note this may result in more macroblocks if there is too much action on screen to encode at the current bitrate)

    Cheers

    Edz

  5. " flex mode for 2:45"

So that would be LP mode? Did you check your setup to see if you have it in AUTO or FIXED mode?

  6. actually most of the time the panny decks give false info on the ifofiles. It may say your clip is 704x480, but run it into some encoders or bitrate viewer, etc and it gives the true size of 352x480, etc

However that vary and fixed can play a role, but mainly it's the time (speed) setting you use on the machine that helps with giving the picture size 352

  7. It is on fixed, has been for months (I had read about that here some time ago)

Funny thing is, I have recorded other stuff before and since then that has always been at 704 (same time length too)

  8. how about this, is the source you are recording from different then other sources you have used in the past? I seem to recall a similar situation with items i have recorded from my older Beta tapes, where it made the pic size that way (352--i keep mine on fixed too). So it could be something with your source material?

  9. Bobm67,

I have a Panasonic E20,E30,& E80. I have learned from past experience when using flex-recording that the Panasonic Exxx will record at 704x480 until the flex time that you set exceeds 2 hours & 23 minutes. If you set the flex time to record 2 hours & 24 minutes it will start recording using the 352x480 size. I guess that's where the conversion starts. At least that is what I found after much experimenting & trial.

    I hope this helps you.

  10. Alareka,
great info regarding the PAN DVD recorder. I have been wondering if it has recording mode where you can select half-D1 (352x480 NTSC). Your answer is YES (just by settting flex recording time).
In this case, it should be fairly easy to record 4 hours on a single DVD-R with very decent quality. I am currently doing this using PC capture, TMPGenc conversion which takes a long time of course.

  11. smart move on using the pc to capture the 4 hours, using that speed on the panny decks pretty much looks horrible. ZFrom what i have experienced, the pc cpature cards still do a much better job then most (if not all) homedeck recorders
