I'll wait until pure 8X burns and cheaper discs from Tayon Yuden. In a year maybe...
Since then, it is still dvdshrink, dvd2one, etc for me.

    Am I looser or what?

Sounds fantastic but the sad truth is that unless the system is completely bug free, dual layer will bring on a slew of burning problems to the normal person. If half of the crowd that normally frequents this forun can't even burn a regular backup wihout stutters, freezes and other problems, can you just imagine the barrage of postings we are going to see?? Burn errors galore!
Should be a lot of fun!

As for me, I think 15 Min a burn is plenty fast already.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

  5. well, i'm sure the price will go down after they've been out.. as with everything.. the interesting thing will be how much the media will cost.

some people have brought up time as a concern.. if you're doing a 1:1 copy of a dual layer disc then you dont have to worry about the time consuming process of transcoding..

doesnt dvd decypter support dual layer burning? i think i remember seeing this in one of the changelogs..

wouldnt it be awesome if all you had to do was rip in iso/read mode with dvd decypter & then burn in iso/write mode?

this will definetly be cool when it comes out. time to start saving my pennies.

Nope, you aren't a looser, you have sound thinking and approach. Let the Americans experiment first.

  8. I think jeex and jtoolman have good points.

See alot of firmware changes, software updates and touchy media!

I won't be running out and buy one. For really long movies, I'm happy to encode to a Large DivX on DVD-R or just split in two DVD-R's.

Also, HD-DVD's will be set by March. (Audio/Video Codecs and Media) And, NEC showed off a DVD/AOD burner for the PC. I hope we can have standalones and burners by Summer, but I'm sure it will take till X-MAS.

  9. I think the new dual-layers still have less capacity than store-bought DVDs, so we are still going to have "shrink" problems on the really long movies.

Just a guess but, the only prob will be that the blank media will initially cost more then the DVD ur backing up. Remember the 1st generation DVD+/-R single side blanks were like $25-$50 each....Do I want to back up a $25 (CDN) DVD movie on a $25 duel layer blank....hummmmm.....

Only viable if the blanks come out at a cheap cost and at faster speed then planned 1x when released.

What are the movie studio's going to do about it is another matter. They prob insist the tha Government levie a big tax on all blanks sold.

What is more intrest to me are HD-DVD recorders/writers. But man, another type of media to contend with.

Did you read the linked article? It says the Philips burner will burn layer 1 at 8x speed and layer 2 at 2.4x speed.

  13. I'm running into some dual layer flippers lately (e.g., Second Hand Lions). I forgot to check if it's dual/dual and I'm at work now so I can't go see. It could be a case of burners go dual, DVDs go quad. I'm not putting away the programs or skills just yet.

  14. usually when you're dealing with a dvd-18, it the full screen on one side and the wide screen on the other.. or the film on one side and extra's on the other.. i'm finding it to be more rare to find films like this because they can sell more copies of the films if they sell seperate wide screen and full screen version and/or a 2nd "bonus disc".

May as well ,since we Yanks are never afraid to fail. But, hey ,at least we try.

I just hope that the average dvd player ( my jvc or my panasonic) will be able to play the new dual-layer burnt backup discs?

Word on the street is that they will since your DVD player plays dual layer now. I don't think they could get the standard approved nor render all home set tops useless.
Plus, who would by them and burn if it didn't work at home without buying a new DVD set-top player?
I think you'll be as safe as you are now. Even now, not all SINGLE layer burned discs work on EVERY player so you'll still have your instances where they won't work.
