I just wanted to post my findings on an issues I was having with dropped frames and sound sync. After reading many posts on this form I finally resolved my problems. This form has really help me a lot.

OK so here it is;
System spec.
P4 2.5 gig, Asus P4S8X MB, Asus 5200 FX VIVO, 3 hard drives 200 gigs total. Captured 640x480 29.7 fps. source VHS tapes.

Every time I tried to capture (X-Men) I was getting some dropped frames and the sound was way off. I tried many different programs to capture with and the best I could get was with Asus Digital VCR, problem with this program I could not use the Mpeg file with any other program. Each time I tried to create a DVD using the Mpeg file from Asus Digital VCR the results would be great video but the sound was always out of sync by as much as 5 sec., yet if I viewed the original captured Mpeg file there was no problems with it. (Note: Asus has it’s own code “Asus ASV2 Video Code”).

After reading lots of posts I think the problems is caused by not restarting windows before a new capture. My typical method was to run a test capture approx 2- 5 min. and then check the results by playing back the captured file in Nero’s video show player. As it turns out this was causing my problems. Using VirtualDub I could see frames being dropped about 1 per sec. (Not good) after I viewed the files and then tried another capture. I ran some tests and if I restarted the computer after I viewing the test capture file I would no longer get dropped frames and the sound was now perfect.

Like many I capture to a dedicated hard drive which is always clean. I am using XP Pro. I have spent many days now trying to figure this out, not sure why this is happening but all I can say is the before I capture now I will always restart my system. I hope this might help out others as well.
