  1. hey there first off thanx for any help in advance.i am fairly apt with picking up hardware/software sollutions and vary rarely come across something that i cant find an answer for myself.however this one im unsure of so first off thanx for any help in advance
heres the prob i baught my nec 8x writer the other week, i also have a philips 8x dvd/cdrw drv. i have aprox 4 dvds that i am using inc hulk, legaly blonde,28dayslater e.t.c The problem is i have encountered a problem once or twice in dvddecrypt that has prevented me from ripping but have managed to work around that with dvdshrink or smartripper. The main proba at the moment is once ripped to hdd shrinking the file always fails with either overlaped 1/0 or missing something. This problem occurs on both dvdshrink and dvd2one and on both win98 and winxp. i just cant seem to get a descent shrink. The process ends at variouse stages each time slightly higher or lower. i am doing dao btw but have similar probs with just ripping the movie.

MY SPECS BE THEM SOMEWHAT MEAGER ARE.

    1.4GHZ amd
    266fsb mobo
    128mb gf ti card
    256ddr ram
    120gb hdd

    FACTS
now ive ruled out the OS as ive tried both 98se and xp but am willing to inst 2000.

My main concern is that my throughput on the system is to slow but surely the shrink soft would compensate for that? and is 256ddr enough its prob 2100 btw.

i also have not set any of my dvd roms to a region as i am unsure if once set e.g region2 they will still be able to play other regions? Though as i am able to rip to my hdd i ruled this out to. The dvdplayer doesnt come into the shrinking stage right?

IVE CHECKED ALL THE POSTING BUT NOT FOUND a problem LIKE THIS

could this prob be my aspi drivers?
any suggestion are most welcome i really need the help. Thanx
    im new so shoot me

  2. also my other theory is that by not setting the region on the dvd drives the data is somehow getting corupted when ripped. is this a viable option?

i have been able to burn die another day be it onto a rubbish bulpaq dvd (now using ritek only) and this resulted in blotchy/freezing near the end of the movie which i put down to the media getting over heated.

ONCE AGAIN I REALLY APPRECIATE ANY INPUT/HELP THANKYOU

Why haven't you set your drive to a specific region yet?
Have you looked at region-freeing it?
You have five choices to select the region you want; my advice would be to set it to the region you're in (UK, US, what?) and then rip again.
Have you tried playing the ripped files from your HDD with PowerDVD?
This will determine whether it's a ripping problem or not.

  4. i have not set them to a region (uk) yet. as i tend to get alot of usa dvds and as i am aware the dvd rom can be region/changed only a certain amount of times until it is locked for good. i will of course use a region free firmware for my dvd rom but am a bit hessitent to use it for my duel nec 8x drive. as if i lock it i dont know what kind of situation i would be left with reading/ripping. Any advice on that id appreciate too.

i have sucessfully ripped them and they all play in powerdvd i just cant seem to shrink the things i have sent the original vobs to a friend whos got a bit more experiance with this and hes going to see if he can shrink them. Ive got a feeling theyre gonna work fine for him and as i have exactly the same software as him im oagling towards the hardware/drivers. I leave the settings in dvd2one and dvdshrink as standard and have tried both 32bit and 64bit settings aswell as allow for i/o overlap. (scratches head) any ideas ???????????? Thanx for your reply m8

you can use a programme called AnyDVD 3 that lets you do it no matter what region your drives are set at and why dont you give clonedvd a try see if it will compress on there hope that helps

  6. thanx for the reply
i have read reviews on most of the dvd(compression software) i havent checked that anydvd so ill look into that THANX! Ive researched clone dvd and found that dvd2one and dvdshrink give better quality with less foreign objects. Im basically trying to get the best output that i can (without using pinnacle) cause im not that patient lol. im not against using clone dvd though and if i cant get past these issues ill hapilly use it. But id really like to use dvdshrink if at all possible. Even if it means building a new system . once again thanx for your input

you will get just as good if not better quality with clonedvd as you would with the others but that is just me give it a try and see what you think

  8. I would go the freeware alternative to anydvd, called dvd43. You need to have a poutin layer though to use it. But you can get that free at VSO I believe. I have look at it.
    Blah, blah, blah

  9. i have just tried clonedvd on xp and to no avail. bad 1/0 was reported. So once again this brings me back to the hardware issue. Im going to throw caution to the wind and being an avid gamer/wolf/cs i am ordering a new mobo, cpu and ram. HOPEFULLY WITH THIS FASTER SYSTEM i will not recieve these issues. 10. I'm sorry if this sounds a bit vague but I seem to recall that Win XP has a problem with burning. I seem to remember something about having to turn off the OS's own burning facilities as it interferes with any other burning software. Unfortunately I don't have any details as I refuse to use XP after a short evaluation for my company, but I should think a little searching on this site will throw up something relevant.

IMHO Win 2000 Pro is far better and presents less problems, but that is my own (professional) opinion and not necessarily shared by others.

Strange, because I heard the opposite, and probably the reason Win2000 was so short-lived.
I have had no burning issues with WinXP, which I found to be the most stable of all OS I ever tried/used, in fact your message was the first I've heard of it.

I would say the first otion would be to region code your drive.
Worst case and assuming you do use up all five options to change the coding; they're only £20 ($36) a time now.
Still, wish I could upgrade mine machine right now
    Good luck

<chuckle> Where can you get Win XP Server? Most companies I know of are using Win2K Server and Win2KPro on the PC's and wouldn't touch XP with the proverbial barge pole.

I thought it was ME that was the short lived OS, but then I've probably got everything all wrong. <g>

Congratulations, and what are you going to call her? I can understand why you can't afford a new pooter tho'.

By the way, am I mistaken, or is Athlon spelt "a-t-h-l-o-n" ?
Now where did that come from?

BTW the reference to XP problems that I mentioned were the result of another thread I read on this site. Someone was having similar problems to the starter of this thread, and others responded with the comments regarding the turning off of XP's own burning monopoly.

We were leaning towards Eva then I saw a documentary on the History channel; I've forgotten about Hitler's girlfriend, it put me right off

Anyways ive spent a while oagling all the cpus and mobos and 1minute 30seconds ago i purchased my new amd 3200+ xp 400fsb. This is probably when u lot are gonna frown at me for not choosing the obvious leader for encoding (intel) but first and foremost im a gamer . ive got some sweet ram on its way too 1gb along with a nice lanparty mobo they should be here by 2morrow and with a bit of hair pulling out and plenty of beer im sure ill have it up and running by this time 2morrow. so ill make sure to test shrinking as soon as ive played 5 mins on wolf lol i have locked the drive now but will wait for the new system before i test her out.

CONGRATS WILL ON THE LITTLE ONE who knows mabye she will turn out to be the next billie gates then dadys gonna have a new sys

  18. I don't blame you for using Athlon's, up until my last machine I did too but I wanted a machine that would fit in with the Hi-Fi system. As a result I got one of those mini cases and the only mobo's that were available for it were Pentium based so I had no choice. Still I now have a 3.2GHz machine with 1Gb RAM and 250Mb of HDD.

    Good luck with the building.

You might want to consider investing in a bigger HDD
