  1. Hi,

I have a "burning" issue… haha in many ways..

I'm only able to burn at 1x speed on my Dell with a TDK AID 440 4X Multi format Internal drive when I burn a global image via RecordNow off of my slave hard drive (western digital 180gb). After trying to figure this issue out by upgrading my 40 wire cable to a 80wire cable and still no results. I then removed the cd-r that the dell came with and made the TDK the master and the only drive installed on the ribbon cable - still it would not work.

I realized it seemed to be an issue with the slave WD HD. So I though what if I tried to burn an image off of the master hard drive instead of the slave WD HD. And…it worked fine - I can do it at what ever speed the media is rated (up to 4x) when I burn an image off of the Master HD.

So the issue seems to be the slave western digital 180gb hd is not sending the data fast enough to burn at 4x speed.

Now on my old HP computer (details listed below) , which had basically the same type of set up I was able to burn at 4x (13-15 minutes) from my slave western digital HD. Why is my new dell not able to burn from the slave WD HD at the 4x speed? I though it was the 40pin, 40 wire cable, so I upgraded it to the Ultra 80 wire type. But this did not solve the issue.

Looking at the Dell and TDK support sites I can not find any info.

My computer is running in tip top shape too! Both drives are always defragmented twice a month. No virus! I always usa Ace Utilities to clean out my junk files, and I also do it manually.

Do you have any suggestions? I don't want to reinstall all of my files/driver/operating system on the WD HD and make it my master. There should be an easier way to do this.

BTW< I am using the same media I have always used - ACCU Media 4x. But I even tried about 4 other brands which are also rated at 4x.

So if I can burn and image from my master at 4x, why cant I burn it at 4x from the slave?

What are your thoughts on this issue?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

He is my current set up:
    Brand new computer:
    Dell 2400
    2.53 Intel P4
    768Mb Ram
40gb Hard Drive (Master) this is the original drive that came with the computer.
180GB Western Digital HD (Slave) - I removed this HD from my old computer and put it in this new dell.
    - both Hard Drives are on the same Ribbon Cable, which I upgraded to an ultra ATA 40pin - 80 wire.
    Same TDK burner listed above
    RecordNow 6.5.1

    Old Set up:
    HP
    1.3 celeron
    6xxmb ram
    same TDK burner listed above.
    RecordNow 6.5.1

  3. Kathleen, hi.

Although you sound intelligent enough to have tried this already, have you attempted to use a different burning utility?

Try something mainstream like Nero and see if you can still only burn at 1x. _I_ would suspect the software before the hardware.

Also, check to see if DMA is turned on for your hard drives (in System in Control Panel).

  4. Also, this would be the correct setup for you:

    ---
    40GB HDD = Primary Master
120 GB HDD = Primary Slave

    TDK DVD-R/W = Secondary Master
    Dell CD-R = Secondary Slave
    ---

You may also have the jumpers on the back of the drives setup incorrectly. I've come to find that XP will "fix" and show drives in the OS even when incorrect jumper settings normally wouldn't allow it (in like 98, for instance). Doublecheck those, as well.
