My last TDKs were ritekg04s and I loved 'em.

    am I shafted?

  2. I've purchased both pairs recently (RiData G04's from Rima and TDKG02000000's from Best Buy). I've paid more for TDK's (even with rebates) but both seem to burn well for me...

I guess the primary difference I can see is the dye is a little paler, usually a bad sign. so far, no coasters, but two of the 10 discs I have burned so far cause a clicking sound for 5 seconds before spinning up properly. makes me nervous.

    Same boat.

My TDK's burn okay. However, they don't play very well. That is they play great in my Apex but not in my operite past the 3 GB mark. They check out 100% in DVDInfo Pro. They Speed test just fine.

My conclusion is that they are marginal after the laser changes intensity at the CAV breakpoint. The opterite is a finicky biatch, so it just stutters.

That's weird....what burner do you have? Between my dad's burner, by friends, and my 2 burners I have only every heard a disc "click" on one burner. That was with my NEC ND1300A.....and that was on my TDK and my Fuji's. It was a wierd sound. Now I got my 2500A and no more clicking....what a great drive!

official TDKG02 discs are good discs ... just be aware there are fakes (anything not in a TDK branded package).

TDKG02000000 are the best discs TDK makes. These are the ones made in Japan and they use the same ones for their "armor plated" discs. You can read 35 comments (all good) about them by clicking on the "DVD Media" square to the left. I personally have made 15 DVDs with these discs and sent them out to various people who have all different players and not one of them has complained that they won't play.

The color difference is because of the dye difference. Ritek uses a dark organic dye, while TDK uses a Metal AZO dye.

TDK dye is similar in color to MCC, Maxel, Taiyo Yuden, PVC and Prodisc. Ritek has a dye unlike any other, deep, deep, dark purple.

cool, sounds like I'm worried about nothing.

btw - it wasn't the burner that was clicking, it was my set top (apex 1500)

Can you please elaborate on what the CAV breakpoint is? It looks like it's going to explain why so many media don't play well after about 3GB.

I've been using TDK (TDKG02000000) without any problems, both burning and playing back. They work both in my Toshiba 1600 and my new Sony NS725P. I've been happy with them. My only concern now is how will they play in 6 months to a year.

    Any input on this?

BTW, I burned them on a Pioneer A06 using Nero 6.3

I can't say anything about your TDK's, but when I bought my A03 in mid 2001, the first discs I burnt was Pioneer (PVC) and TDK. All of the TDK, as well as the Pioneer, still are played in a set top DVD player, and read back on computer DVD-ROMs today.

The same can not be said for the Princo discs I used late 2001. They all died in 2003.

  13. TDK makes two discs. The G02, which is their own and is one fine disc. & the new 4x dvd-rs are all rebranded Ritek G04, which is also a good disc. If I had my choice, I would prefer the G02.
