  1. like the recorders do?
Someone made a comment that a vcr will outlast a dvd recorder because it runs at lower wattage and much cooler. (which makes a lot of sense).
I was wondering if the same would be true of dvd players.

I think that statement is a gross generalization, and a VCR probably generates more internal heat because of the larger motors it needs to move the tape and the helical head, as opposed to a DVD recorder which only needs to spin a relatively light, well-balanced disc.

You only need a fan if you have hot spots in the machine that could cause the individual components to exceed their design max. temperature. It's normal for electronics to run hot. I've seen silicon transistors actually glow incandescent before they fail. They only need cooling if they run the risk of going over the limit which is different depending on where you're measuring it. Usually devices like integrated circuits have absolute maximums given for junction temperature, substrate temperature, case temperature, ambient temperature, etc. A device that is running within its normal range, even if it feels warm, is not having its life shortened. Anyone who has ever owned a Marshall or Fender tube amp can tell you that

If you're unsure if your player is running too hot, I suppose you could get a small muffin fan or a CPU fan and mount it somewhere on the case to improve airflow, but you'd probably only want to try that with a DC fan. Putting an AC fan in there might introduce electrical noise. It seems like a lot of trouble given the low cost of players these days.
