  1. Just got a new computer, and it came with a 48x burner. My old one was only 4x, so burning at high speeds is new to me.

Is there a maxium speed that I shouldn't go over when burning VCD's? Like 8x or 16x or something? Or can I burn them at 48x and have them look as good as the ones I burned at 4x on my old burner? I seem to remember a thread about this, but I am unable to find it. (By the way, I use Nero to burn.)

Any input would be nice. I'd really appreciate it!

    Thanks!

The correct answer is, "it depends."

My personal experience has been that whatever your burner's maximum burn rate is, setting the burn speed to 1/2 of that will give you significantly better odds that the disc can be read by older CD drives or on non-computer equipment (such as portable audio-CD players, set-top DVD players, etc.).

If you only need to be able to read your discs on the computer which you made them from (such as archived data CD's), then as long as you've got decent media, go for the max rate the media supports.

As always, your mileage may vary.

  3. As folarsox said it depends. Try burning first at 4X, it works then go to 8x, then 16x then 32x. I wouldnt go faster than 32x as it aint worth it. I never go faster than 24x. Defrag your HD reg as well.
