  1. I'm in the U.S (NTSC). and am trying to backup what I think is a DVD-R that was made/authored in the U.K. (PAL). But I can't even rip it to the hard drive with either DVDDecrypter or Smartripper and can't understand why... ??

There is no copy protection and the Decrypter gives the 'title' of "Philips DVD-VR" for the original disc. Is there such a thing?? Anyway, when trying to rip in file mode, i get the following error:

    "Failed to patch file!"
    C\Philips_DVD_VR\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_01_0.BUP
    Invalid IFO / BUP"

and the log gives a bunch of these yellow warnings:

W 10:05:21 Skipping Sector 1215 - Pack Header Not Found

When trying to rip in ISO mode, it fails at ~60% with additional errors. My all-region/multi-system set top DVD player will play the original disc, but with lots of skipping/pausing and freezing.. I figured I'd watch it on my pc, but this yielded the same results.. ??

Also, I noticed that each VOB is 859,104KB each opposed to the normal 1GB I'm accustomed to seeing.. I'm stumped.

What am I missing here?? Please advise. Thanks.

  2. sounds like this was authored using a stand alone dvd recorder, ive had trouble ripping these in the past also, what format is the dvd? -r/w +r/w???

  3. The disc was made in a Philips standalone recorder. It's +R or +RW, not that it matters for what you want to do.

Sounds like your disc is corrupt. This is the big problem.

I have copied many discs from my Philips. You can also try:

    1) Copy the files to the hard drive, burn to new disc. Dvddecrypter/smartripper not req'd, just use windows.

    2) Rip individual titles in ifo mode, then reauthor. Often if I get iso read errors, the titles rip fine in ifo mode.

Does the disc have the Philips Logo on the main menu?
    If not....
Put the disc in DVDInfo Pro ...does it STILL say Philips DVD-VR?
    If not...
It has had the original Philips menu removed and a new "fancier" menu placed over it. The Philips menu is still there however....which is most likely confusing the heck out of your equipment.

  5. It's a DVD+R with disc ID: RICOHJPN. And yes, the menu is very simple/basic, but it does NOT have Philips listed on the menu anywhere.

I'm trying to rip in IFO mode, but it doesn't look good---veeeery sloooow with multiple errors with multiple I/O errors beginning right around the ~69% of the main IFO stream. When I opt to "Ignore Errors", rip time becomes very slow (sub-1x) and more errors with Decrypter. Final failure comes at 72% and "Ignore Errors" will not work anymore. I can actually hear my Lite-on 166S "straining" to read the disc..

How do i copy the files from the disc in Windows without ripping to hd? Every time I double-click on the DVD drive (in hopes of getting the Video and Audio TS folders, the actual disc starts up with PowerDVD).

  6. have you tried right clicking the drive in my computer and EXPLORE ... ? to try to veiw the files
It appears that the CPU was operating so fast that it began to execute instructions before they arrived. This execution of future instructions created a small tear in space-time itself through which part of the cpu passed into a parallel universe

  7. Your posts indicate you have a corrupt disc. The fact that it was originally made on a Philips doesn't matter. Maybe cleaning it will help.

Run a read test with dvdinfopro. It will probably show your disc has lots of read errors. You could try isobuster to recover the data.

  8. Thanks to all.

    qpskfec,

Just tried ISO and it worked 'better' than other methods so far. But it stopped at 80% and gave me 'corruption' error.. I 'ignored' and it managed to rip the remainder of the DVD into an ISO file.

I'm going to burn tonite onto a Ritek DVD-R and hopefull get better results on my set-top player.

  9. didn't work.. damn!

I'm running the disc thru DVDInfoPro and you are correct, it's only 70% thru and DVDInfoPro has read 49 errors.. Each reads as follows:

    Error - LBA #0015fa01h
    Error - LBA #0015fa02h,
    etc..
    etc..

So does this mean I'm sol and have to contact the eBay'er from whom I purchased the disc from?? Or is there another method i can make this sucker play properly?? Please advise. Thanks.

  10. DVDINFOPro is STILL running after 90mins! And it's detected 481 errors! And it's only 72% completed... wtf?!!

Guess it's safe to say I'm sol now, eh??

  12. Philips standalone recorders are NOT shit!
Maybe your own equipment is crap! Or the discs were bad, were
they from Princo? That's a brand which gives lots of probs.

I have made a few dozen recordings with a Philips DVDR70, NEVER
had problems copying the files to my PC simply with windows explorer.
All the recordings were edited and menu's added with TMPGENC DVD author and then burned on DVD+R.

    I use a Lite-ON 4x speed dvd-burner in my PC.

I do have ONE disc that will only copy On The Fly. It is one that I made with my Philips Recorder and then stomped a new menu and chapter markers over it.

My other Philips created discs copy just fine under any conditions. I'm guessing the disc wasn't checked by the seller before he mailed it off to you....and that the disc is in fact defective.

Tell him to send you a replacement and that it won't play in either your computer or your DVD player. He can't argue TOO much with that logic....and ask him to check it before he sends it out. In other words...kill him with kindness first....can't hurt.

Some information that may be of help.

I have had the same issue with my Sansui DVD/VCR recordable combination unit. (The DVD-RW is actually a Pioneer dual format).

If I understand the very brief description in the manual, the VR is an editable format that can be read in the standalone supporting this mode or if the computer DVD drive supports VR reads, otw, at least using DVD decrypter and Nero, it sees it as a blank disc.

I tried using DVD Decryptor in UDF and if gave me a "UDF parsing error" and stopped there.

I have been unable to read or copy/rip data from these VR disks.

I remember reading somewhere in this forum that PowerDVD will read these, I haven't tried this yet though.

I got around this problem by recording in the 'video' mode not 'vr' mode, finalizing the disc and then ripping it to HD. From there, it can edited .

    Hope this helps
