  1. my main dvd player is region free, but when playing r1 dvds it appears "jerky" on my (very) old pal 50hz tv, i assume that its because its missing out on the extra 10 frames/sec?
is there a cheap adaptor available to sort this out, or do i have to bite the bullet and buy a new tv?

Bite the bullet. Modern TVs can cope with a mode known as PAL60 for just this reason, yours obviously can't.

  3. Most modern TV's can handle NTSC...

If you don't want a new telly, yes, you can buy convertors, but decent ones are not cheap (better to buy a new telly), but it could be down to the player, too. Check the setup meu to see if it gives you a choice as to how it handles NTSC signals. If you've set it to PAL60 then yes, it could be the TV doesn't like it, but most players I've dealt with that claim to do any conversion reframe the NTSC into a PAL frame and do a pretty good job of it too.

If the TV is getting on a bit, I doubt if this is the issue, but some modern sets with 100Hz+ and image stabilisers can be thrown by NTSC signals, but that's mainly due to bad clocking an behalf of the player. Dropping back to 50Hz for the respective input does the trick in most cases.

  4. my dvd player does output pal60, but my tv doesn't like it one bit!
unfortunately my tv is rather old, and at the moment i cannot (read not allowed) justify a new tv...i could get away with spending £50 to £100 on a converter, so any help would be much appreciated

Why not just go to Tesco and buy a new TV? Bush 21" Nicam for £119. Not fantastic quality, but certainly adequate, and I bet you can justify £120 on a TV more than £100 on a converter!

  6. I have yet to see a coverter for £100 that does a good job. They do the job, don't get me wrong, but the company I work for make professional equipment and their coverters start at many times that figure... it's a specialist bit of kit. Even some of those can be phased by certain material.

To be honest, you can get similar results to the cheapie converters by simply re-encoding your video using one of the guides to the left and re-authoring onto a DVD-/+R.
