  1. I just installed it this past week, and I can burn to CD, but not DVD. I have tried Imation, Sony & Philips to no avail using Windows MovieMaker. I just get a message that says "This is not a recordable/rewriteable CD. Please insert a CD into drive D. It doesn't even mention "DVD" as a possibility - only CD. If I try to cut & paste a file and drop it into the drive under the "My Computer" utility, it refers to the drive as a "CD drive" in the details section at the window where it says "Files ready to be written to CD". The firmware revision says 1.06 under the "Properties Menu". Does this make a difference?

    I have a Dell Dimension 4600 desktop that came with a DVD-ROM. I later bought the NEC 1100 not realizing that it was a DVD+RW drive and many DVD players wouldn't read the home videos I am trying to make. I never was able to brun with that at all because I only had CD-R and DVD-RW media (no "+" media). I just switched out the 1100 and added the 1300. The original DVD Rom drive is not hooked up.

    I've tried to lay out some facts. I will answer any questions that you all might deem helpful in getting this to work. Thanks a million.

  2. Hello Balsy
    I have just got a new pc with the same NEC dvd.
    I'm new to win XP but have managed to burn using nero ok
    and dvd xcopy express although not all of these backups work on all dvds.

    If you want me to check any settings or anything let me know.

    using Windows MovieMaker
    Can MovieMaker burn to DVD at all?
    The firmware revision says 1.06
    1.09 is the latest (even if 1.06 should work) and can be easily installed. DL from NEC.

    Please purchase a third party DVD burning application and repost If your burner still doesn't get recognized

    I think XP has no clue you swapped out the drive (and from the experience I've had using WINDOWS burning applications I'd say don't go there, anyway)

    suggestion: NERO 6.0023 or higher (don't use 6 from the store without an upgrade)

    doesn't dell believe in software from other than MICROSOFT?
    (no bundled app?..EZ CD creator is usually coming with this drive..and while it should workk..I hate that ROXIO product and use only WIN ON CD from them)

    NEC 1300a with 1.06 firmware burns problem-free with Nero 6.0.0.23 to any DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+RW i tried so far... But i recommend RitekG4 media, if you want to play that disc in 1st gen. standalone players.

    go the free route first...get DVD Decrypter, rip a dvd as an image and burn with Decrypter. don't need anything else. good luck. BTW what burning software came with your NEC? my NEC came with Nero. install that and use it too.

    Get Nero 6 or ultra m8, just like an egg...so versatile and great results everytime.
