  1. This happened on Saturday after the unit had been on most of the day.
I was watching Voom thru it and the channel started crackling. I thought it might be the dish, so I checked the locals on the ota antenna and it was the same. It was the same on all the inputs and while playing a dvd.
Then when I went to power it down, it was frozen. I ended up having to hold in the power button for 10 seconds to get it to shut down. Then when I turned it on again it went into recovery mode and then was fine for about 5 minutes. I ended up shutting it down for the night and when I turned it on Sunday it again went into recovery mode and then has been ok since.

I did have a ram disc in it on Saturday and my E60 does get warm when a disc is loaded. In fact, any disc that has been in it for an hour or more is warm to the touch when removed. Before I shut it down on Saturday, I removed the disc and only had a disc in today (Monday) to record for a couple of hours. Is this an overheating problem and what are the symptoms of overheating? This unit is only about 6 weeks old, so it is still under warranty.

    TIA,
    Steve

The Panasnoic E50/60 series doesn't have a fan inside, so a warm disc is quite normal and no one seemed to have reported any overheating issues on these models. Overheating normally causes video image to freeze or skip during playback, so your problem doesn't seem to be related to overheating as long as your machine is placed in a well ventilated position. It's more likely a problem with the audio D/A converter IC, just a guess, of course.

If the problem persists, you should contact Panasonic to find a local authorized repair shop for a checkup since it's still under warranty.

  3. I forgot to add that when I played a dvd in the E60 when it was having the problem the picture did freeze after about 5 minutes. The little icon still showed a spinning disc, but the picture was frozen and none of the buttons would work. I then had to hold in the power button for 10 seconds to power it off. When turned on again, the unit would go into recovery mode.

My E60 sits on top of my entertainment center with nothing on top of it. Like I said, I've only had this for 6 weeks. I will no longer leave a ram disc in it for quick recording and see if this eliminates the problem.
I do have an E30 and have not had this problem.

Here in Aus our E50 and E60's are fitted up with fans to the rear of the case. I have a few E50's and E60's stacked on top of each other (spaced apart 15mm for airflow) only have problems with coaster ready media.
I'll have to think of something to put here...

  6. My E50 has a fan in it!

I've never seen it work, but then again I always have an external desk fan blowing on my stuff to keep it cool. It's mostly for my old Sony machine, but it helps the E50 too.

    I'm in Canada.

Are you saying that US E50s don't have fans? Check the instruction manual, because mine has a picture of the back with the fan grating labelled.

    Weird.

  7. Its summer things get hot.

Don't put it in an entertainment case or on the carpet.
