  1. I bought Win XP Pro and installed it on my old computer. I sold it to a friend who said he was going to wipe it and install Linux, but he said he decided to keep XP. I want to install on my new PC, but when I first installed it, I had to activate it online. If both PC's are on the net, will something bad happen? I don't want to buy a new version of XP, so can you only install it once or does not matter how many times its installed and activated?

YES!!! Bill Gates will show up at your house with a S.W.A.T. team and you go to jail for the next 25 years. I wouldn't worry about it all if it were me. Nothing will happen... All I can think of is Windows updates might get a little messed up if your both downloading the updates at the same time. I have several computers, all with the same key No problems @ all 8)

Why can't you manually type in the code when your intalling it??

Worst case scenario... Type in an old Bootleg Key. I'd give you some but the Forum wouldn't like that too much. Just try a search on google for WinXP Key or something like that. I know you can buy the key without the OS for $85.00

  3. I have had problems with duplicate XP copies, the updates (not at same time) and they disabled my MSIE, WMP, etc. EXTREMELY reuced OS functionality.

  4. If any problems occur, can I unistall WIN XP Pro and leave WIN XP Home. Thats what I'm going to upgrade from?

  5. If he's really a friend, he would either pay you for the OS (assuming it is legit) and therefore allow you to buy it's replacment, or format his drive and purchase his own OS, permitting you to use your OS unincumbered. Certainly a friend would inderstand seeing the difficulty this is causing.

Why should you have to go to XP Home, when he knew he was not buying your OS and is therefore not entitled to use it? If it was clear that he was not buying it -- why leave it on the HDD? I'm sure you deleted your data, etc. A clean fromat would have been far less trouble than a selective deletion of data and/or programs. A lot of effort was put forward in keeping the OS on a HDD when it was not part of deal.

Was the fact that your friend got XP part of the system used to close the deal? If so -- it's his and you are not entitled to use it. Is there more to this than we know?

I would not go to XP Home unless there is no legit claim to the XP Pro your friend has and there is no way he will uninstall.

  6. Ok, to be true I bought XP Pro for my brother and sister in law. I installed it on their computer, which is mine. I just wanted to install the same version on my computer. The thing is that I bought it at my university for $7. But they only let you buy one so I wanted to use it again. Any similar stories?

  7. Can you get one of your University friends to buy a copy for you @ $7.00? Certainly you know someone who already has XP Pro and would not need to buy another even for $7.00.

  8. Heres what I would do in your shoes.

I would do a clean install of XP Pro (your legal copy) on my computer and activate it. The internet activation will probably fail so you will be calling on the phone to do it. They will probably let you activate it after asking you a few questions why it's now on a different machine. At that point I would use Ghost and create an Image file of that install. Then 'you won't need no stinking activations......'

When you brother's computer gets messed up and needs it reinstalled I'd give him your old Home edition and let him call Microsoft activation. lol

    Good luck.
