I have just purchased a PVR capture card and was wondering if it is possible to burn more than one tv program or movie onto a dvd-rewrtable disc

Yes, you can burn several movies on one dvdr. But more movies means worse video quality(lower video bitrate).

it will only be like half hour programs off the tv that I miss while at work, just really need to know how to get more than one on a disc. How would be able to choose each program once on standalone player

I do the same thing. Capture Mpeg2, 352x480 and set the bitrate to average 3000 kbps. With these settings you should be able to fit around 4 hours of video. For better quality go with 720x480 at 6000 kbps, you can fit around 2 hours at this setting. Be sure to set the audio capture to DVD compliant 48 khz, a bitrate of 256 kbps should be good.
After that you will have to author a DVD to create menus and DVD structured files (i.e. vob, ifo, bup). A simple program such as Ulead Movie Factory will allow you to creat simple menus that will allow you to select each title. There are many guides on how to author a DVD on this site. Also, www.lordsmurf.com is a good site to go to for capturing questions.
