Did you go to the Pioneer site? You did not mention if you had on your original post.
    Hello.

  3. I want to find the driver too. The website does NOT have the driver and it is not on the disc that comes with the drive. My computer keeps recognizing the drive as a cd rom instead of a dvd writer. Does anyone know why that would be?

Try updating you ASPI. There are a few posts on how to do it.

You don't need a driver, it's an ATAPI device the same as your CD rom. It may just work anyway if you have installed some DVD writing software. It may also depend on your OS but you haven't bothered to fill in your computer details so we don't know what you are using.

  6. Sorry for not filling in the info. I'm running WinXP and the drive is still only being recognized as a cd-rom. If I put a regular cd in it, it will play, but if I put a dvd in it, the drive gets stuck in a pattern of reading until I take out the dvd. I'm not sure what I need to do to get the computer to recognize the dvd writer correctly. I tried updating the ASPI drivers, but that didn't do anything. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

Have you loaded any DVD writing or playback software? I'm running Win XP Pro and have a DVR A05 installed as Master on the secondary IDE channel with an unbranded generic 12x DVD ROM drive as Slave. Device Manager correctly identifies them (as ATAPI DVD-ROM 12x and PIONEER DVDRW DVR-105) and shows them both as DVD/CD ROM Drives standard ATAPI devices.

Does Device manager correctly identify the drive? If it does, Windows is finding it but you don't have the correct software loaded properly so Windows doesn't know what to do with it.

  8. I have dvd software loaded on the computer. When I go into device manager, the following two drives are listed:

    COMPAQ DVD-ROM SD-612B
    HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B

So it looks like it is recognizing my drive as a dvd rom, but not the correct one. Do you know what the default setting is for the pioneer drive (master/slave)? I didn't change any jumper pins so mine should be the default.

  9. You might of just said a mouthfull there...

I'm an old computer junky from way back and I don't put in CDROM and/or DVD drives without setting the jumper settings. It's real easy.

The top drive is always your junk drive. It's the one that will get the peanut butter and jelly sandwitch put in it, so put your worst drive up top and pin it 'master'. The second drive down you pin it 'slave'. If you only have 1 hard disk drive in your system then the top drive will be "D:\" and the lower on will be "E:\". The ribbon cable has 1 connector on one end and 2 (closer spaced connectors) on the other end. Put the long end on the board, the other end on Master, then put the slave in middle. The red line always goes toward the power plug.

These pin settings are located on the rear of the cdrom drives and labeled very well.

Some have clamed that Windows XP will use 'cable select' setting for dual CDROM drives making this whole pin deal obsolete. I've never tried it because, like I said before, I'm old school and that's not how it's done....

It's getting the info from somewhere, are you sure you've got a DVD writer??

  11. Yes, I'm sure that I have the dvd writer

I'll try setting the drive to be a slave and see what happens.

    Thanks for your help.

  12. I have some good news and some bad news.

Bad news: my search with google for your listed drives returned positive results. You don't have a DVD Writer. You have a DVD ROM and a CD-RW.

Good News: I just saved a bunch of money on my auto insurance.

    Jim,

Unless you are dumb and have been really, really royally screwed, I believe you have a DVD writer. I mean, a DVD ROM goes about 30 bucks (bought a lite -on yesterday for that) and a writer goes 100 and up. And if the box, unopened, says writer, that is what you got.

Bottle-neck is close with the cables. Problem is, some have the connectors reversed, you can't put them in top-master, bottom-slave orientation. Lay out your cable, red stripe to the left looking at the machine and see if the end connector is at the top or if the center connector would be. Set master-slave that way.

Go to drivers.com, register, dl your ddrivers. Reg is free.. Most any driver you could want there.

    Good luck,

    George

I shouldn't say you "can't", as an absolute.
I have cables that the connectors are oriented differently, as to the pin side.

Some when you lay them out as they'd be plugged into the board, the plug is pointing up, others, the plug is pointing down. You would need another 6 inches of cable to reach the top bay, or you would have to damn near tie a knot in it to go top-slave, pull the end connector down and under to reach bottom-master.

That cable is easier bottom-slave, straight plug in.

If you have only gotten the one style wire in your experience, you've been lucky.

BTW,you should have quoted the qualifier "Problem is, some have the connectors reversed " in your post.

BTW2, why make the "junk drive" master rather than slave? What'ss the diff?

  17. I have an sd-612b, too, and I'm sorry to tell you that it is a typical dvd rom, NOT a burner.

Compaq put them OEM in most of their presario 5000 to 7000 series as a "compaq sd-612b," but the drive is actually manufactured by samsung.

    Sorry dude... NOT a writer.
