  1. I use an eMac with superdrive and usually if backing up a dvd i would use DVDbackup > DVD2One > Toast

In this case i have recorded a film from tv using my philips dvd recorder which recorded it onto a DVD+RW. Problem is i started it recording like 5 mins before movie started and it has ad breaks in the middle.

what i want to do is re-author it to start the movie in the right place and cut out all the ad breaks one by one, then burn onto a DVD-R.

what programs can i use, for the mac, is there any guides on here i can use and how easy is it to do!!

    hope someone can help.
    cheers.
    Ross.

  3. yeh the dvd mounts and plays on my eMac. I read an article on here about authoring which outlined a process using dvdshrink on the pc to do a similar thing, well it let you cut the footage, but i need to know how to do this on the mac!

    cheers for any help!

dvd studio pro 2 will let you cut out stuff. you wouldn't have to re-encode either. just demux, then import, then cut out. just cuts thoughs, no transitions or anything.

or you could use dsp 1.5 and just set markers at the comercials and use stories to skip over that content.

  5. hi pants,

thanks for the response! the good news is that i have been able to get my hands on a copy of DVD studio pro 2. The bad news is im a newb, i have never used the program and dont know a great deal about authoring at all. I dont know what demux means? do i need a seperate program to do this or can i do it from within dvdstudio pro 2? then once it has been demuxed what format will it be in and how do i go about cutting it. Sorry if this is a big ask but i need some help guys.

    cheers.

in that case you should do lots of reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its not a difficult process, but its not something that is learned in one sitting.

it would be no problem for you to make copies of it, but like you said the commercials are in there.

thus you have to "import" the contents to an authoring (dvd making) software so you can edit out the unnecessary info and save / export the final project to your harddrive for burning

dvdstudio pro is perhaps the best app, but its not the easiest to use the first time around.

so i would look at how much you want the commercials cut out and how much you will need to learn for this process to occur. If you plan on doing this a lot its well worth the few evenings palying around with the app and reading the 1000 page (hahah is it really that big) manual on the app.

if you have questions as you go there are masters of dvdstudio pro who reply here and i am sure they can help you out

I prefer not to use the app 1. because its expensive, and 2. ill just live with the commercials

    to demux, try ffmpegx,
    http://homepage.mac.com/major4/videots_divx.html

    or moremissing tools.
    http://homepage.mac.com/rnc/.Public/MoreMissingTools.zip

either should work, this will give you .m2v/.mpv and .aiff/.mp2/.ac3/? not sure what audio format your stuff will be in.

take these into dsp2, drag into time line and can edit there. either grab the end of the track and drag it in to where you want to edit or select track in time line and then in the inspector under clip info you can trim or change duration. not the easiest thing to do, but it works.
