  1. hello!

i have tried everything to capture Firewire to Firewire, but to no avail.

i want to capture output from my Matrox 1394 to my another 1394 system dedicated to capture realtime mpeg1/2 - instead of using composite/s-video. this way, no need to use software mpeg2 encoder.

any help/hint would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, you can not do it.
Your system with realtime mpeg1/2 can capture from firewire, but only from certain devices. (It is the same with any firewire system)
Most will only capture from cameras. Unless the manufactorer of your capture board has written some crazy drivers to make it function with other equipment..(most likely not)

I would suggest just output via firewire to a DV camera. (there will be no quality loss) Then reimport from the DV camera into your other system.
It will take twice as long as what you are attempting, but you save the quality.

  3. Why not just transfer the DV file to the encoding computer via a network and encode it from a file instead of realtime?

  4. Of course this can be done, I don't know what Kelso is talking about. You can easily do that with Firewire. You should elaborate on what your problem is though, connecting 2 cams to transfer video from one to the other is no problem. Its exactly the same as when outputting from one cam to your capture card, no problem, unless your hardware and/or software is not properly configured. Are you having trouble with the connection process? Explain more if you want help.

(.....this is an old post but a result of my following the AUP and searching the forum rather than starting a new thread).
    ...
I have some large files I need to transfer from my laptop to my desktop.
In my desktop I have a firewire card but no network card, and in my laptop I have a network card and no firewire
    ...
I would prefer to add a firewire card to my laptop as I hope to use my ADVC-100 with it for small size 'captures', but I would like to know if I can transfer data via firewire pretty much like you can via network card.
    ...
Is this possible or do I need to buy another network card for my desktop computer?
    Many thanks,
    Bill

Firewire can be used as a network connection. I think Windows automatically installs network drivers for firewire when it detects a firewire card (at least it did for me in WindowsXP and in Windows Me).

    Thanks, that's great to know.
So it acts pretty much the same as a conventional network, ie. you don't need specific software to transfer data, just simply using explorer/dragging and dropping will suffice?
I wonder if any firewire card will do, or are they all the same?
I have WinXP on both mavcines so imagine that'll help a little.
Thanks again, I'll go search ebay for a PCMCIA firewire card

I found some info about firewire networking. It's much faster than a standard 100 mbit/s connection and it works well with WindowsXP built in drivers but you can use unibrains software if you use other versions of windows. But you can't use longer cables than 15 feet without adding a repeater, but I guess that is OK when connecting a laptop to the desktop.
