  1. I just checked on the TMPGEnc site and read that this program is only for WinXP/Win2000. I've tried Pinnacle Studio 8.4.5. (Came with my ATI AIW 9000Pro) but it crashed. After a check at a Pinnacle Forum, I found alot of people complaining of Studio 8 Crashing on a regular basis. So, my question is which software is recomended for authoring dvd's with Win98SE.

    My Specs:

    Win98SE (Obviously)
    Athlon XP2100 Processor
    Syntax Motherboard (VIA chipset)
    256 MB RAM
ATI AIW 9000 Pro (MMC 8.1)

    Any responses are truely appreciated.

  2. I have done some extensive work with Ulead's products on Win98SE. I never ran into a stability problem. Mind if I ask what you are working on? Good luck.
2 DVD, or not 2 DVD, that is the question.

  4. cim,
I'm gonna capture several old VHS tapes before they degrade any further. I have some vhs footage that is 13 years old, and although I know the result won't be amazing, I need to capture it and save it on a dvd before the quality degrades any more. So most of my work will involve vhs to DVD.

HamSandwich, I'm quite certain you can use TMPGEnc DVD Author with 98SE. You just have to keep in mind the 4GB limitation of FAT32, and you also can't use TMPGEnc's DVD writing cabability. But, other than those limitations, you can use the program with 98SE.

I would sugest DVD Recorder with good TBC (for example Panasonic) for this kind of work.

Also, bump your ram to 512MB. Don't go over that because 98SE does NOT handle anything over 512MB without extensive tinkering - that is, it can be done, but it's probably not worth the effort. You'll want the extra headroom for video processing.

You should also plan on capturing the video using "pass-through" on a digital video camera - you will not lose as many frames and the video will be far more stable with the added time code. Do a search on "pass-through" for more information.

If you don't have a digital video camera yet, now seems like a good time to get one. Until you're sure of your computer setup, you could capture the old video onto new DV tapes and preserve it that way for now (with very little loss of quality). Good luck.
