my drive is nec 1100a and i have been using datasafe media 4x (ricohjpnro1) - these burn at 4x
i buy off www.ukdvdr.co.uk and my last order i had to buy datasafe media 8x (they were out of 4x)
the media code for these was ritekr03 but i could only get these to brun at 2.4x
both media are advertised as ritek ??
anybody explain the difference ??

Don't know much about 8X media, but perhaps there was no 4X write strategy on the disk, only 2.4X and 8X? Seems unlikely, but you never know. If you don't already have it, download DVDINfo Pro and see what it tells you about the disks.

The problem is that your firmware has not the RITEK...R03 code implemented so your ND-1100A defaults to 2.4x speed. There is a hacked ND-1100A -> ND1300A firmware, and I think the 1.09 version has the 8x Ritek code implemented for 4x burn speed. Check etna.rpc1.org
The question about Ritek and Ricoh has been asked before but in short Ritek manufactures media for Ricoh using Ricoh tech and quality control and these discs have Ricoh mid code.
