/hey all,
I;ve got a Pioneer A06 with the 1.07 firmware and am using the latest imgtools to burn. I just received some Ritek 4X -R discs and imgtools will only burn them at 1X. I've burned generic +r's at 2.4X before so I know my drive can do it. I don't know what the problem is. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
Russ

It has expired. I downloaded it again and got Nero6 Ultra. In Nero I set burn speed to 4X and now I get all the options.
Does it default to 1X when the trial expires?

Don't burn with IMGtools. Write the img file with IMGtools and use DVD Decrypter to burn.

Northcat,
I know a lot of people do it that way, but that just adds extra time and steps to the equation. As I do it now, I simply Shrink, then burn with Imgtools, total time about 40 min to shrink and about 15 to burn. If I add an extra step of creating an iso image that will add another 15 minutes.
Is there any reason not to burn using imgtools?

Your statement is inaccurate, if you use IMGtools to create the IMG file and then burn it, IMGtools will make the img file and then burn it...2 seperate operations anyway. If it is only taking you 15 minutes to burn then you are probably burning at 4x unless your DVD is very small. I burn at 4x and it takes 12 minutes to burn a 4 GB DVD...IMGtools takes about 3 minutes to create an IMG file...so 15 minutes is about right.
I don't really have a reason to not use the burning tool in IMGtools, I have used Decrypter for quite a long time now, and it works. I have never had a bad burn or made a coaster...and if it's not broken, I don't fix it. -
Northcat,
I re-downloaded the latest Nero and 4X is now available to me. Does the ability to write at 4X disappear when Nero expires? If that's the case, then I'll start using imgtools to create the image and burn with DVD decrypter.
Currently I use imgtools to burn directly. It doesn't create an image and then burn (at least not that I can tell). It starts writing the lead-in immediately and my burns take 13-14 minutes.
If I am stuck with 1X when Nero expires then I'll definitely start creating an image file and burning with DVDdecrypter. I didn't realize that imgtools created the image file so quickly. I never have used it to create an image file. I figured it would take a lot longer than that.
Thanks for the help.

I just burned 2 DVDs today. Both burned at 4x.
1 was 4.5 GB - burnt with Nero - took 14 minutes, 9 seconds
1 was 4.48 GB - burnt with Decrypter - took 13 minutes 23 seconds
Like I said before, even if IMGtools is telling you it is 1x...you are burning at 4x.
It's been quite a long time since I had a trial version of Nero. I've had a registered copy of Nero long before I started messing with DVD. So I don't know if that is a limitation of it or not.
I may be wrong on the IMGtools creating an image file before burning, but I seriously doubt that it would burn direct without creating one...it is an image making software, but it could...13-14 minutes is being burnt at 4x. Even nero creates an ISO of what you burn. -
Northcat,
Thanks for the replies. Yes, Imgtools is now telling me it is burning at 4X instead of 1X. I fixed that problem by downloading a new trial of Nero.
I seriously doubt that imgtools is creating an ISO first, because 1) my hard disk space never changes and 2) the moment that I hit the burn button, my DVD burner spins up and the burning light comes on.
I guess it doesn't really matter though, regardless all of my burns are now only taking 13-15 minutes depending on size.
Thanks for all the help.
