I have done alot of reading on this site and also http://www.avsforum.com/ . And I must say with all the good and bad of every recorder the Panasonic DMR-E80H is the best DVD recorder out of every other recorder out there even better then the Panasonic DMR-E100HS and better then Pioneer's 510. First I want to say I think this is the best recorder for me and may not be the best for some one else.
The Panasonic DMR-E100HS seem's to be more picky on 4X media then the Panasonic E80H. On the Panasonic DMR-E100HS this is the first 4X burner there using so it's some what picky on media. This is a problem for me I hate going to the store and buying some brand think when I get home will I have problem's with these disc. Companies change there die from time to time. So one brand that work's now might not work later.
Pioneer DVR-510HS there is one problem that I have with this unit the editting commercial's out and readding this post. One good thing out Pioneer there DVD burner's are top of the line. I have a AO4 never made a bad burn. I have update to a LG 4081 to read DVD-RAM and have not had any problem with the LG at all.

This is some thing that I would have a problem with when I watch my DVD's back having a audio cut out. And doing more work to edit is not some thing I want to do.Ok, seems that if you delete chapters you do create a slight pause in the video and audio. This is kind of dissapointing. Plus I wasn't able to combine chapters for some reason. There is an option in the setup menu called seamless playback and this got rid of the video pause, but the audio still cuts out for a second on chapter changes. It would be nice if someone knew whether the firewire could be hooked up to a PC. Then you could edit much more easily on there with the right software. Maybe I'll pick up a firewire cable tonight and check it out.
Pioneer I would say has a better 4X burner then Panasonic and a better remote control. The Panasonic Remote is oh ok could be better but it work's fine if you point the remote at the E80H
The next model's from Panasonic and Pioneer I hope they get all the small quercks out.
I'm the tipe of person I want some thing stable and easy to use and that why I think the Panasonic E80H is the best. The one thing it has a 1X burner it not a big deal at all dub at night dub when your not recording. And if I had to buy again I would go with the Panasonic E80H. Now the up coming E80H I would stay away from it has a 4X burner in it. If Panasonic put's a setting in there to burn the disc slower then 4X and let you drop to 2X or 1X then I might buy it.
If any one is in the market for a Panasonic E80H I got mine at www.6ave.com lost price in town If any one is in the market for a Pioneer DVR-510HS

Good assessment, spiderman. I've had the E80H for about 5 months and I still believe it is the best bang for your buck in the DVD Recorder market.

"Roll Tide" thanks I feel the E80H is the best when it come's to recording TV show's and even camcorder stuff is good with S-video.
"donpedro" your right Panasonic E100HS should put a setting in to lower the burning speed. As for right now the E80H is a 1X burner and very stable.
I have not tried the Pioneer but I bet it's a very good recorder and Pioneer I bet has a stable 4X burner. I just do not like the editting set up on the Pioneer from what I read. And the small audio hicup when you put the file's back together.
As for the Pioneer's picture in Sp mode. It might be as good as Panasonic or better. It's so hard to tell with out test clip's.
I will say this if you want easy editting Panasonic is the way to go. If you want a 4X burner that stable Pioneer is the way to go.
I'm looking forward to APEX DVD recorder's with hard drive's. APEX recording is very good. Do not know if this recorder will be DVD-R or DVD+R. Also looking forward to JVC DVD recorder's in the USA.
