  1. Hi,
I'm looking for a video capture card to replace my UK Panasonic DMR-E100H dvd recorder. I'd like it to be able to record from both PAL and NTSC tapes to dvd. I'd also like to record in high dvd quality, 10 megabits per second or more.

I have a powerful 3mhz AMD chip, massive hard drive and 1 gigabyte of DDR RAM.

    Thanks for any help

  2. The Panasonic DVD recorders do such a superb job converting VHS tapes to DVD format that many folks have noted the DMR-E(whatever) series actually *improve* the quality of program material transferred from VHS to DVD.
You're not going to find any computer capture cards that do as good a job. The Canopus or Datavideo do a good job but not as impressive IMHO as the Panasonic DVRs. Various folks tout the quality of ATI AIW cap cards but they can be expensive, and depending on your hardware/software the ATI might or might not work well. And the quality still isn't as good as what you get from a Panasonic DVR.

I believe that per the DVD specification the maximum bitrate is 9.8 Mbps and that includes the video plus all audio and subtitle/subpicture streams.

  4. Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have an Nvidia 5900 card, so I can't use Ati. The panasonic is great, but most of my tapes are NTSC. I have a Sony PAL 60 video player and my dvd recorder does'nt like PAL 60. Are there any cheap pure pal converters? If not, could you please recommend a PCI capture card.

    Thanks

These are a very good brand:
    http://www.viewcast.com/products/osprey.html

Notice that the high end models are 1000's but they do hardware MPEG encoding, DV, Audio/Video In and out.

For cheaper solutions - there are a number on sale at www.compgeeks.com
