  1. What cheap media works well, preferably burns at 8x, on a Plextor 708A? Does Ritek or Optodisk +r 4x work? I haven't seen too many reviews for Ritek DVD+r 8x, so dunno if it's worth the extra money.

*Please include which site you purchase yours from. Thanks.

I'm a newbie, so here are my specs:
    Winxp sp1 operating system
    P4 3.0c 800mhz fsb processor
    WD2000jb hard drive
1 gb TwinX corsair XMS series ddr400 RAM
Ati Radeon All In Wonder 9800Pro video card
    Asus p4c800-e deluxe motherboard
    Plextor 16x dvd-rom
    Plextor 708a dvd-rw

  2. I had problems with Ricoh 4X media burned at 8X with a Plextor (unusable disks with errors). And since Ricoh isn't even one of questionable brands, i decided to stick to burning at 4x speed with ok brands like Ricoh and Ritek and use only the best available media (TDK/Taio Yuden, Maxell, Verbatim/MCC) for 8X speed. No problems with this sofar.

  3. I have the Plex 708A.

I just switched from using Vertbatim DatalifePlus 4X to using Arita DVD+R 4X.

The Arita DVD+R 4X writes at 8X speed. They are made by Ritek.

I've burned more than 200 of these Arita DVD+R using Nero. I haven't had one bad burn!

  4. if ritek manufactures arita & arita is cheaper does that mean that the grade of these disks are lower quality than "ritek" branded dvd's?

also, ppl on this site have been raving about Ritek's G04's. is there anyone out there that can tell me how these ones work on a Plextor 708A?

thanks for ure input so far, being a new to all this, it is greatly appreciated.

  5. it just dawned on me that g04's is a "-" format & -'s can't burn at 8x. so n/m 'bout the 2nd 1/2 of my last reply...

i've been reading up on dvd compatibility for plextor 708A on various websites & they all seem to be conflicting. the dvd+r's that are listed as compatible on plextor's site seem to be a bit pricey. & even the compatibility charts b/t meritline & this site are broader in that they list more brands, yet their lists don't match up. so, im very confused.

bottomline is i am looking for something inexpensive, yet dependable that burns at 8x.

Office Depot had a sale the day after Thanksgiving back in November 2003. The Imation DVD+R 4X speed was $62.00 for 25 pack spindle you buy one get one free. Not bad price for 50 discs. I have the Plextor 708A and I use the Imation DVD+R 4X speed that burns at 8X. Those Imations are RICOH discs. If you look at Plextors recommended discs site it will show RICOH discs.

According to the information I gathered from using DVD Indentifer, the ARITA DVD+R 4X are indeed the highly regarded RICOHJPN-R01-002

They are excellent disc. They should work great in any burner around.

  9. i had been using digital matrix dvd+r 4x which worked fine on my sister's burner. but i have had all sorts of problems with playback since i had started burning them on my plextor-708a such as the disk not reading, jittery playbacks, green cubes.

i was thinking a different brand of dvd would solve the problem, my boyfriend doesn't think that is the case. in any case, hopefully, these suggested dvd's will do the trick.

thanks for the recommendations. anymore suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have been using the memorex RICOHJPNR01 4x disks for a while now. Under firmware 1.02 I was able to burn them at 8x but since I updated to 1.04, Nero 6 starts burn at 8x but it takes 14-15 mins to complete burn so somehow they slowed down to 4x. Have to do some more expermenting as to what happen. One thing about the Plex 708 is that it prefers good media. Good media mostly translate to expensive media Also It seems the "MY" plex prefers to write +r over -r media. Dont know why but -r media that works well on my Pinoneer 05 will not work as well on the Pex. I guess the Plex drives where part of the +r alliance and not the -r camp so their drives seems to work better with the +r media.

  11. Just because you can write to the disc doesn't mean it will be readable in the target device.

My recorder will write to a beer mat if I round the edges off, but there are quite a few standalones (in particular) that will not read +/- R unless they are very specific media brands.

Compatibility is a two way street, you know...

Which release of Nero 6 are you using?

If I recall correctly, release versions of Nero higher than 6.0.0.11 had some compatibility issues with the Plextor 708A. I do not know if the Plextor firmware update 1.04 resolves the issues with those Nero versions higher than 6.0.0.11

I've upgraded my Plextor firmware to 1.04. And, I'm using Nero 6.0.0.11. Using the Arita DVD+R 4X (RICOHJPN R01-002), I havem't had any issues. I am still able to burn at DVDs at 8X.

  13. tried to put in an order for arita dvd+r's since they seem to be the least expensive of the suggestions so far, but seems as tho newegg & supermediastore are out of stock. :-\ any suggestions on where else to find these?

    Nero 6.3 and Plex 1.04
I will try to find an older version of Nero and see what results would be.

    Thanks[/quote]
