  1. i'm desperately searching for a decent media player that works under windows 7 64.

it doesn't even have to be a 64 bit software, just something that i can actually rely on.

i used to use gomplayer (all time favorite) on my 32 system, and installed kmplayer later on just to play music because gomplayer didn't work well with all mp3 tags.

but both failed me on my windows 7 64 bit installation, and now i can't find a single decent video player that can manage mkv files. gomplayer doesn't even play mp4s on win7 64.

i've been installing codecs like krayzee and i got wmp11 to play mkv files, but it doesn't display the subtitles on my mkvs or even lets me select the streams.

I use MPCHC and it works perfect on my win7 64bit system. Plays MKVs without any problem.

  3. thanks for the quick response.

of course mediaplayer classic, i knew somebody was going to say that. great player for movies. but i mostly watch animes/series/videos/clips or listen to mp3s, and playlist wise mpc is useless. every time the girls and i get ready to go out we hand out at my place and i usually en-queue a bunch of music videos in gomplayer or kmplayer and just let it run through the playlist. is there no way to do that on a 64 system?

i guess i'll have to download mpc for my animes though, too bad i'll have to load every episode by itself (god i just noticed how lazy i actually am lol).

    VLC?

And despite your photo and reference to "every time the girls and I ...", based on some things you have said, I would bet almost anything that you are a guy. But you'll probably deny it, thinking that you will get better help here by pretending to be a woman. We actually don't care.

i kind of pointed out my predicament with mpc above. but i installed it anyway, and i keep getting an error before every clip (even though every clip plays fine):
No D3DX9 dll found. To enable stats, shaders and complex resizers, please make sure to install the latest DirectX End-User Runtime

i'm sure i installed the latest directx with some update a couple of days ago.

i also explained my vlc problem above.

i seriously doubt girls get more attention on software based boards. i just decided to upload a pic this time because i just registered on another site that required a pic and i needed one there so why not just up one here after having wasted 30 minutes to resize a pic. not because i couldn't find out how to do it, just because most my pictures looked indistinguishable in 120x size lol. i don't know why i'm explaining this, it doesn't make a difference what you take me as, so on that note, never mind my dear.

i just read great things about kantaris on vista 64, and i want to try out the foobar too, but splash looks great on the screencaps. i really wasn't expecting this many options.

i'll try out splash first. thanks again everybody!

You need directx runtime http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b665...DisplayLang=en or just try change the directshow output under View->Options->Playback->Output and change to System Default(EVR Custom is preferred though).

But as you say MPCHC is best for video and not mp3 and playlists.

  11. right but i always had mpc on all my old machines so why not have it on win7 just in case i run into something some player doesn't like, it's always nice to have mpc around ^^

as to the directx runtime i'll download that (thanks again), i wonder though why they didn't list win7 64 on there, they listed every other possible 64 bit microsoft software, and win7 standard, but not win7 64.

i tried splash, great and fast player, nice with playlists, but i've got a fairly big screen, and wont be able to keep series running while i'm browsing because it doesn't seem to have an always on top function. and it's impossible to get rid of the huge black borders it makes on videos that aren't in absolute widescreen and i can't scroll the volume with my mouse which was a function i abused like a mad scientist on mpc, kmplayer and gomplayer.

Hmmm... settings->general: application window always on top. Or maybe you meant that you want only video on top?

This player has about 6 months only and missing some functionality. They just added mouse scroll for playlists in last version. So maybe there will be scroll for volume added soon. The volume control also was added in 1.0.1 or something Before you even couldnt change volume in player hehe

  13. how could i miss that!? i looked for it everywhere.

i didn't know the program had only been out for 6 months, that pretty decent in that case. i hope they can fix the faults it has. maybe i'll have another look at this software next year.

since i tried out all kinds of programs and figured there might be some other people who are facing the same problem i currently am/was.

    i blogged it! ^^

just did it real quick, so if you guys got anything to add go ahead:

MPCHC supports playlists. There are both 32 bit and 64 bit builds.

  15. yeah i noticed that, it just isn't that useful.

i wish there was a skin for this. maybe if i was a guy i wouldn't care about how the program looks, but looks do mean a little more than i'd love to admit.

but like i said i'll be using mpchc for videos and music video lists etc. it just isn't the best look, the second gomplayer gets updated i'll give that another shot.

thanks to everybody for being so helpful!

Nice blog, lots of work to review all this players.
I dont agree with everything but this is normal. There will be as many opinions as many people will join the discussion
It all depends on what PC spec do you work, what videos watching, what does matter for you and what does not.

Ie. Kmplayer has a lot of functions... some people love this and I don't. I have a headache when i see all this settings and i find it not much functional. But this is all that kmplayer team can make - lots of settings, they dont work on any advanced solutions or proprietary codecs, so they can work on settings, though i would like them to work more on stability

On the other side Splash - great picture quality, super fast responsive player but not too many settings available and not many video types supported. They keep adding settings and features but as i see they are more focused on proprietary codecs, picture quality and HD videos only.

You mentioned GOM player - For me skin looks good and many settings, but... For AVCHD is useless (slow and low picture quality), doesnt play my Canon 5D MKII clips, no dxva :/

Finally i choose Splash for HD and mpc-hc for all other.

No you did NOT. None of your previous posts mention VLC. None of them. Unless you go in after I post this and use the editor to change them. I had Firefox do a search on the page for VLC and my post is the first reference to it. I use VLC on 64 bit Windows - it works.

  18. In the review he linked to he mentioned stability problems with VLC on his 64 bit Win7 system.

Silly me for not realizing that I'm supposed to click on a link at the very bottom of a post with no explicit instruction to do so. Heaven forbid that this information actually be placed in the post itself. What was I thinking?

I use many media players that has 64bit version and all are fully compatible with Windows 7 64bit :
MPC HC : with the last version 1.7.0 32 bit and 64 bit its has LAV filter as internal decoder
    Link : http://www.mpc-hc.org/

MPC BE : is another great player also available in 32 and 64 bit
    Link : http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/

Daum PotPlayer : my prefered media player available in 32 and 64bit
    Link : http://www.dvbsupport.net

VLC Media player: i don't recommend for all people because it can harm you laptop speakers
but in the last version the problem seems to be solved.

Note: i recommend to install K-lite Mega Codec pack on your computer.

What error, if any are you getting for the players that "don't work"?

I've not had any issues with any of the players you listed, and I am also using Win7 64. I'm currently using PotPlayer and MPCHC. I used to use KMPlayer (don't like the new built-in advertising) and I've tested most of the others noted in this topic.

The software can be 32 bit or 64 bit and run properly on a 64 bit OS. So there is likely another issue going on with your PC.

    EDIT: nevermind...didn't see the date.

BTW, according to Microsoft tech support, ALL 3rd party codec packs are stupid post windows XP. And they're right.
