  1. Im looking for some advice..this is what I would like to do.

    1. I have an old camcorder which uses VHS-C ..over the years I have recorded many tapes....I would like to be able to play these tapes through the computer to edit them and then write to a DVD.

    2. I have many Movie VHS tapes and would like to put them on a DVD

    3. Capture programs from the Televsion

Can all these things be accomplished with a capture card or editor machine...Do I need separate equipment or is there something that will do it all....Can I get some feedback on which is the best way to go to acheive these things...

    Thanks

  2. Best recipe I've found:

Canopus advc-100 analog to digital convertor.
    ScenalyzerLive capture s/w.
    TMPGenc Plus MPEG-2 encoder s/w
    TMPGenc DVD Author compile/burn s/w

Also check "How to" section on l/h side of this page. Lots of help there.

  3. rcb, thanks for the reply.....

So with that unit (Canopus advc-100) I could edit all my tapes like I want and also use to capture from the TV

Did you ever hear of the Matrox RT.X10

    Thanks again

  4. You can do it all with the same card. It can be done as cheaply as with a $35 WinTV card, free HuffyUV codec, and free TMPGenc all the way up to the Canopus box, etc. that the other guy suggested.

  5. I like the ATI AIW 8500 Radeon Cards. Office Depot is supposed to have the 8500 AIW Radeon Card on sale for about $60.00. If you are near a Office Depot you might want to check it out.

  6. There are a few different, very distinct ways to do capture.

    1. Analog capture using a card that can handle capturing at 640x480 or better (e.g., 720x480). This appears to be an expensive option.

    2. Capture to DV AVI via Firewire.
    a. Using an analog > digital converter (such as my DVMC-DA2) where you connnect your analog source (s-video or component connections) to the converter which has a firewire connection to a firewire card on your computer, or
    b. Using a capture card that has analog inputs on it, or
    c. Using a camcorder that has a firewire connection into your computer and analog source passthrough.

1 and 2 require that you then convert the video to MPEG-2 which is the most time-consuming part of the process.

    3. Capture to MPEG-2 directly using an MPEG-2 capture card.

I'm looking into this now as I'd like to eliminate the "convert to MPEG-2" step.
