  1. I hope this is the right forum to post this in. I usually burn files of all kinds to CD-ROMS to free up some space when my harddrive is nearly full. However, today I experienced something for the first time.

The burning was successfull, but when I put the CD in my CD-ROM it all goes wrong. I can see the files on the CD, but when I select one, my pc freezes and I can hear the CD spinning like the drive is searching for something. Only way to unfreeze it is to eject the CD, but then both my CD-ROM drives (burner and regular) is gone from "My computer" and I have to turn off my computer and back on to get them back. (Restarting doesn't help.)

The files don't have any weird names and I use Nero for burning. I have it set to no multisection, finalize CD, ISO level 2, Mode 1, Joliet, Allow 255 characters in file name, and allow a directory structure of up to 8 depth.

I never experienced this before. All other CDs I make work fine. I could understand if it just couldn't read the CD, but that it freezes and the CD drives then stop functioning has me puzzled. I already wasted 3 blank discs, can anyone help me or explain what the problem might be?

you must know someone else with a computer who will let you put a cd in their drive. what is on the cd? music? video? data? nero has a check box at the burning stage which allows the data you just wrote to the disc to be verified once its been burnt, it adds time to the burning process but it should stop things like this happening or at least alert you to when it has happened.

  7. Yeah, I can try it at a friend, but right now. All the files are short mpeg/avi files. I'll try the nero verifier, but I assume it'll say all is alright since there's no error when burning.

  8. I tried burning the cd again with "Verify written data" on. The cd burned successfully, but the verification failed. I have no idea what the error messages in the log means though. Can someone see what's wrong?

Btw, I wonder why it says "ISO Level : 1 (Max. of 11 = 8 + 3 char)" because I always select level 2 (max of 31 characters). I know I also selected it this time and I checked afterwards - it was still set on level 2.

  9. I'm not sure, but if verification fails, does that mean CD writer problem, or maybe corrupt files??

i would say it is one of those two things. if the data is ok an the computer like if its a movie file and it plays ok, then i would say it is the recorder. have you tried using a different burning software, just in case nero is causing the problem?
    Quote Quote
  11. No. I've always used Nero and there has never been any problems. I can try a different software though. I guess it could also be the burner, but why should it suddenly break?

  13. Since you're backing up various files on your PC, its a variety of files so there is a pretty good chance of corruption....

  14. I had the same problem with a TDK Velocd burner. When trying to access a file on the burned cd it would whine like a jet engine trying to access it then it would usually give me a "cannot read disk" notification. When it did access the file it would freeze up when I tried to copy the file to the hard drive.

I did all kinds of stuff to make it work but finally gave up and bought another writer. When I was taking the first one out I noticed it was rattling. I figured what the heck and took it apart. Inside was a thin plastic washer (maybe some kind of spacer) about 3/4" in diameter just laying at the bottom of the burner housing. I never did determine where it came from, but I'm sure that was what was causing the problem.

I threw away a whole 50-pack of blank CD-R's because I thought they were the problem-darn!

  15. It sounds like I have the same problem, must be the burner then. I just thought it was strange that it could suddenly break, when the computer hasn't been moved or had any blows. I'll try a new burner then, they're also cheap

    Thanks for the help everyone!

  16. Ok, I tried the CD on a friends computer and he had no problems playing the disc. This has me puzzled. Obviously the CD has been burned correctly, but CD burner can't read it. It acts as if there is no CD in the drive. My other CD-ROM drive can read the CD, but when I select one of the files it goes cold and both CD drives disappear from "My Computer". On a side note, neither drive has any problems reading other CDs.

Is the CD defect and my friend's drive is some super drive or what? Does anyone have an idea? I can't be the only one in the world this has happened too

  17. Is the CD-ROM Drive MultiRead or MultiRead 2 compatible/complaint?

MultiRead means it can perfectly read CD-R/W's...

  18. It's multiread, but I don't know if it's multiread 2.

Your CDROM should be able to read it then... maybe damaged/bad lens or other part?

  20. It isn't quite that simple. If you read all my posts you'll see that both drives have no trouble reading other cds, only new cds I burn, but, they can be read with no problems on other computers. I'm most interested in why the drives disappear from "My Computer" though.
