Good afternoon all,
I am trying to locate a capture card/device (with hardware encoding)that will create mpegs from both a analogue and digital sources and if possible can output to both as well. I have not found web information that great and the same can be said of retailers product knowledge. Any info is most welcome.
Cheers
Grant

Try the capture card review section, it's very good.
W.tgpo, my real dad, told me to make a maximum of 5,806 posts on vcdhelp.com in one lifetime. So I have. -
Thanks for your comments, the "capture card" section is goof but not good enough, it does not go into enough specifics about the mpeg2 capture, it does not tell you if its all hardware, captured by hardware then rendered etc.

those should be mpeg2 only hardware cards...no software. It is not 100% correct because I haven't manually tested all cards.
And please try choose a better subject next time you post. -

p.s. some of the cards are not true mpeg2 hardware capture cards! They use software to render after the capture. -
Its been answered go to the pinnacle web site and select the capture piece of kit you want whether from a camcorder or from tv.
The quality is excellent. -
capture piece of kit
I thought Pinnacle sucks . What's this "excellent" thing. ? -
go to the Canopus web site. They supply a hardware based A/D and D/A converter you are asking about.

I use the Dazzle 150 to capture from VHS, DVD, and my miniDV camcorder. It will hardware encode to MPEG2 straight from the source to your hard drive. THe Pinnacle software supplied is as buggy as it comes, but once you learn the problem areas and workarounds, it is usable. At least the Dazzle captures very good quality mpeg2 files. You can edit and render them in Pinnacle Studio Quickstart or use TMPG Author to edit and burn them without rendering. Pinnacle has an option to burn to disc, but it doesn't work and Pinnacle doesn't seem to be inclined to fix it. Advise not to bother upgrading the Pinnacle software. I first went to the 8.10 upgrade and got errors on shutdown and no increase in usability or performance. Then - just for grins and $40 - I bought the upgrade to the full blown Pinnacle Studio 8 and it won't even install without the user jumping through all kinds of workaround hoops. So I am just using the Pinnacle Quickstart software that came with the capture device and it is acceptable.
Hope this helps. -

Perhaps you should post your queston in a comedy forum.
Try reading the forum (inc. the rules) before you get smart next time.

Stay away from Pinnacle. Read the reviews about them and you see many people complain. I bought their hardare MPEG encoder (USB based) a few weeks back and it was really bad. It had bad interlacing on the playback.
Some alternatives to investigate are Hauppauge or ATI cards/devices. For example Hauppauge sells an external USB MPEG2 encoder, or the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9000 or higher cards should do the trick. -
I'm confused
All this time I thought this was the comedy forum.
You mean these comments about Dazzle and Pinnacle being
excellent were really serious ? -

Pinnacle is a bear to set up right, real proprietary, and does have hardware assisted encoding on the higher end cards. Many opines on value.
ATI AllInWonder works well too. Real Proprietary. I have read great things about the new 9600 AIW and the capturing from it.
Osprey cards (model 200 and up) also have hardware encoding, much easier to set up and will work with varied capture software. (VDub et al.)
(What I use)
I never had much luck with Dazzle stuff. Many swear by them, me I swear at them.
Canopus has a lot of fans. I have no knowledge.
www.videoguys.com will provide you alot of details from a MARKETING viewpoint.
Baldrick's capture card section will give you details and a few opinions from real users.
Take your best shot.
The more you spend, the more encoding the hardware does, as a rule. -

Try Hauppauge their products do hardware encoding and come is several types (internal and USB).
I use the WINTV PVR USB 2.0 and have very good results.
The MPEG2 encoding produces DVD compliant files that I use in TMPGEnc
to produce the DVD VOB files. Very quick(25-30 min). -
