I'm looking to buy a new DVD-Rom and wondered
what brand/model I should go for.

I'm primarily interested in speed, 2x is just waayyy too slow.

I did a search and one person recommended the LiteOn XJ-HD166S.

Are tehre any other options or opinions?

    Thanks for any help.

I agree totally with that drive. That is the exact one that I would have suggested. You can buy it at Newegg right now for $32.00 with free shipping.

maestro5050, what speeds do you get with this drive?

Right now I have a Pioneer A05 with firmware enhancements
that give me up to 7.5x that I use for ripping.

The problem is that the drive is on it's last legs, it can only burn
4x dvds at 2x....because I used it for ripping.

    Thanks for the reply.

I also have a LiteOn, you can expect to get about the same rip speed (7.5 avg.) for dual layer dvd's with the LiteOn, a little faster for single layer.
