SubTool not doing it's job! Argh!!

can i get a recommendation on another subtitle converting app that converts .sub to .srt? i downloaded SubTool following one of the subtitle guides here and i've found that it's hit and miss. most of the time it misses saying the .sub file i want to convert isn't a subtitle (or is in an unknown format). i have no issues converting .srt to .ssa that Virtualdub requires using the SRT to SSA Converter program. it works like a charm. but i do need something that works converting .sub to .srt. thanks.
