I just got a dvd burner and i was wondering if dvd x copy platinum would be good enough for all backing up dvds. I don't really want to mess around with too much complex stuff, i just want a program that can quickly transcode the dvd9s and in the process maybe keep a few extras.

Try DVD Shrink (freeware) the results are comparable and none of the warning screens, copy protection and other junk that MackemX refers to above ...... also very simple to use.

DVD X COPY PLATINUM IS PURE GARBAGE AND ITS A RIP OFF! Its a junky program the reasons are bad compression (leaves unburned section on end of dvd media, thats valuble space thats not used) and less re-authoring features than other transcoders. ya don't waste your money with that shit. like it was posted before go with dvd shrink not because its free because its the best.

DVD X COPY Platinum version still sometimes getting error on some movies it won't shrunk small enough. I prefer the Gold version in split etc.. but you'll still need DVD Decrypter or something like that to get the VIDEO_TS to removed the watermark.

The fact that it's free alone was enough to sway me to use DVDShrink and other software. As far as quality I could'nt say. But I've used DVD X Copy (not platinum) and results were perfect. But why pay for anything if you can get it for free!

I've got a wife in nursing school and three kids. I can't afford a hundred and fifty dollars for software to backup my DVD's!

I don't know where you came up with that. I don't use XCopy anymore, but I just looked at a couple disks I did last year when I did use it.

DVDXCopy- does not compress- splits 2 layer disks onto 2 DVD-5. So compression is not an issue.

DVDXCopy Xpress- I looked at 2 disks done with this- one has 4.36 and other other has 4.33 on the disk- so where's that valuble unused space?). And when I use Shrink I rarely put more than 4.1 Gig on a disk- cuts down on the errors that are more likely to occur at the edge of the disk (which therefore makes it much less valuable to me).

So what do you do with that valuable space when you have a movie that only requires 3.6 gig with no compression?

I'm sorry I was talking about DVD X COPY PLATINUM not DVD X COPY, there are two methods of burning to dvds spliting it to two discs or compressing it enough to fit on one disc. Well when I put in a movie that was maybe 7 gigs and then have DVD X COPY PLATINUM compress it and burn it there would be say an inch or less of unburned space at the edge of the disc. My guess is that even though when I get rid of a few extras the megs don't go to the movie to improve the quality, the movie still stays at the same compression even though I got rid of some large files(dvd extras), thus leaving an inch or so of unused space

dvdxcop is horrible. Waste of $100 bucks. The biggest nightmare i've ever had with software.
