I just got a dvd burner and i was wondering if dvd x copy platinum would be good enough for all backing up dvds. I don't really want to mess around with too much complex stuff, i just want a program that can quickly transcode the dvd9s and in the process maybe keep a few extras.

they apparently deactivated his copy of DVDXCOPY on his PC also. Notice it is alleged and not actually proven!
321 Studios declares that its piracy prevention measures are working on the day transfer and preliminary injunction motions are to be heard in a New York City courtroom. 321 Studios recently relied on DVDXCOPY's built-in piracy prevention measures—the backup copy video disclaimer and ability to remotely de-activate a customer's copy of DVDXCOPY—to shut down an accused copyright pirate. 321 first heard of this Illinois man's alleged activities in court papers related to Paramount Pictures Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation v. 321 Studios, a lawsuit filed in the Southern District Court of New York on November 14, 2003. The company took action the same day by remotely de-activating the man's copy of DVDXCOPY XPRESS.
321 Studios has several anti-piracy measures built into its DVDXCOPY series of software, including:
- An eight-second, indelible video warning, similar to the FBI warning found at the beginning of many DVD movies, alerting viewers of the backup copy that the DVD is not an original and is to be only used for non-commercial, personal use.
- An electronic watermark that can trace any backup copy made with DVDXCOPY back to the original point of purchase allowing 321 Studios to remotely de-activate the software and prevent further misuse.
- An embedded bit flag that prevents making a copy of a copy using DVDXCOPY.
- A $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person using 321's software to pirate movies.
"This case also proves that our customers are not pirates," Semaan continued. "Out of the hundreds of thousands of copies of DVDXCOPY sold, the studios can only point to ONE alleged misuse of our product and in this one case brought to our attention, we were able to help bring a stop to it within minutes of learning about it."
321 Studios provides software tools to help consumers protect their investment in digital media, and is the leading provider of DVD backup, recovery, and creation software. Founded in 2001, 321 Studios' premier DVD backup title, DVD X Copy Platinum, is one of PC Magazine's 'Best Products of 2003'. -
Try DVD Shrink (freeware) the results are comparable and none of the warning screens, copy protection and other junk that MackemX refers to above ...... also very simple to use.

DVD X COPY PLATINUM IS PURE GARBAGE AND ITS A RIP OFF! Its a junky program the reasons are bad compression (leaves unburned section on end of dvd media, thats valuble space thats not used) and less re-authoring features than other transcoders. I recommend NERO RECODE as explained in my other reply that I left here https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=828117#828117

ya don't waste your money with that shit. like it was posted before go with dvd shrink not because its free because its the best.

DVD X COPY Platinum version still sometimes getting error on some movies it won't shrunk small enough. I prefer the Gold version in split etc.. but you'll still need DVD Decrypter or something like that to get the VIDEO_TS to removed the watermark.

The fact that it's free alone was enough to sway me to use DVDShrink and other software. As far as quality I could'nt say. But I've used DVD X Copy (not platinum) and results were perfect. But why pay for anything if you can get it for free!
I've got a wife in nursing school and three kids. I can't afford a hundred and fifty dollars for software to backup my DVD's! -

I don't know where you came up with that. I don't use XCopy anymore, but I just looked at a couple disks I did last year when I did use it.
DVDXCopy- does not compress- splits 2 layer disks onto 2 DVD-5. So compression is not an issue.
DVDXCopy Xpress- I looked at 2 disks done with this- one has 4.36 and other other has 4.33 on the disk- so where's that valuble unused space?). And when I use Shrink I rarely put more than 4.1 Gig on a disk- cuts down on the errors that are more likely to occur at the edge of the disk (which therefore makes it much less valuable to me).
So what do you do with that valuable space when you have a movie that only requires 3.6 gig with no compression? -

Well when I put in a movie that was maybe 7 gigs and then have DVD X COPY PLATINUM compress it and burn it there would be say an inch or less of unburned space at the edge of the disc. My guess is that even though when I get rid of a few extras the megs don't go to the movie to improve the quality, the movie still stays at the same compression even though I got rid of some large files(dvd extras), thus leaving an inch or so of unused space

dvdxcop is horrible. Waste of $100 bucks. The biggest nightmare i've ever had with software.
