  1. does anybody know a faster way to derfragment the harddrive other than using microsoft's disk defragmenter because it seems to stick on 1% for a long time and when it gets to 100% it starts over again. i wish it would just show me the overall progress, so does anybody know any good derfragmenting programs.

Executive Software's Diskeeper 8 or even Speed Disk that comes with Norton Utilities works pretty good for me. If you're having problems with Defrag that comes with Windows, you can probably get better results running it from safe mode, that's what I used to do before I got a better defrag program.

  3. Diskeeper is great, it can defrag files that Windows defrag (actually a crippled version of DK!!!) can't!
Free 30day trial of DK here: http://www.executive.com/downloads/menu.asp

Also if u get DK Lite which doesn't have DK's automatic defrag, it's free forever.

  5. i thought that the norton speed disk did not defragment files and only moves the commonly used files to the front of the harddisk. THIS IS WHAT IT SAYS IN THE SPEDD DISK HELP FILES.

Really? That sux! It will help open frequently used files, but won't help overall drive performance...

Well, if you want to split hairs, that's correct. It's not a defrag program per se, but it does act as one in a way, because it moves files to where they will be more efficient. So it does help the performance of the disk (otherwise, what would be the point in using it?). However, I use Diskeeper most of the time when the disk is fragmented (usually about once a month) and use speed disk about once or twice a week. That works for me, you can do however you wish.

if windows disk defragmenter keeps restarting, its because there are other programs accessing the hard drive. before you use defragmenter, hit ctrl alt del, and close down everything you dont need. especially internet connections and anti virus software. then run defragmenter

Norton's Speed Disk DOES rearrange the files, and DOES move them all to the front of the disk. Look at the map as it is working. It shows you that it is maing one contiguous block of data.

That it is also putting your most used files at the beginning of those files, that block, is an added bonus.

And, it does work more quickly than Windows own defragmanter.

Executive Software is the only prog that may beat iot, Diskkeeper, light, Pro, whatever, and for those you will pay, and pay well.

I have DLd them all, from their site, never used them, gonna have to try them, so I am not talking out my butt.

Win NT, and maybe W2k, came with a crippled version of Diskkeeper. MS even admitted that Win Defrag was useless..

    Cheers,

    George

If thats the case, then you might just be best booting into safe mode via the F8 key and trying to run it there. If it is a problem with other programs causing it to restart, then it should definately run there.
