  1. Hi.
I just bought 100 Ritek 4x DVD-R disks from meritline.
    They are useless!
I work on a 1ghz iMac with a gig of ram with the pioneer 105 running panther.
I keep getting this error message:
The drive reported an error: Sense key=illegal request,
sense code=0x21,0x02 buffer underrun...The disk failed to be written.

I have burned over 50 DVD with no problem. I did notice that when I name the disk it shows up as a DVD-Ram disk...Do you think that meritline sent me the wrong disks?
Any help would be great and you will probably get good karma
    thanks.

Scott, need a little more info...

an illegal request often points to trying to do something
that cannot be done, such as burning a VIDEO_TS folder
that is on a READ only partition of a Disc, or if
the VIDEO_TS folder was not Macrovision crippled or disabled.

    Please tell us the following:

    1. What method are you using to rip/backup your DVDs.
    2. What method are you using to burn your DVDs...I assume Toast,
since I have seen this error in Toast before, but what version,
what selections are you making (Data, Video, Disc Image), etc.
    3. What speed are you burning at? 105's can burn at 4x speed,
but perhaps you got DVD+R's by mistake? Have you tried burning
    at 2x or even 1x?

    let us know.

  3. Thanks for getting back to me.
I use osex...then sizzle...create the img file...then toast set for disc image.
I have done it this way mnay times.
I am trying to burn at 4x, I did not try a lesser speed.
I did encounter a problem just trying to create a backup of only 1.5mb of data, the drive just spun and hung withe the beachball spinning.

Try burning on the media at 1x speed.
The fact you are getting a spinning beachball
    could be a Hardware problem.

Try 1x burning speed. I know for a fact the Ritek
should burn at 1x speed ( I've burnt some in the past),
and then just for grins, try burning a text file of some sort
( perhaps an installer log) to CD-R. If it fails both times
( by failing I mean SENSE KEY errors like before)
then you got a bad Hardware problem, most
likely the drive has gone kaput.

    When my Pioneer A03 went south, I couldn't burn a 16k
text file at ANY speed to CD-R, and that's when I knew the drive
was bad. Sent it in to Pioneer, they confirmed it.

This happens to me too, but burning to CD.
I've just installed a fresh copy of Panther(10.3.2) on my harddrive.
    I've also installed Toast 6.0.3
After all that, I repaired permission.

Whenever I burn images and/or burn VCD's, Toast keeps bringing up this dialog saying "The drive reported an error: Sense Key= ILLEGAL REQUEST, Sense Code=0x72, 0x03, SESSION FIXATION ERROR-INCOMPLETE TRACK IN SESSION".

After pressing the button "OK", it shows up another dialog saying " Lead-in or Lead-out failed to be written."

What the heck is going on!?
I've trashed Toast and all that preference. Still, same thing.
It didn't happen to me before when I had Toast 6.0

    my suggestion would be
    1. use older toast
    2. contact roxio.com and ask them what they think

strange, i can think of 4 people off the top of my head who I know have iMac's all 1ghz and toast 6 gives them problems like this.........

    hmmm.........

i think roxio.com would be able to help you more with this
