    downloaded mpeg files have had no trouble in the past with relplayer recognising the files but the last couple of days the files are coming up as .DAT files i have tried changing the extensions which allows them to be played but i cant load them into any of my joining software as they do not recognise these (only TMP does but getting sync probs)

    You can't change video.DAT to video.MPG and always make it work. There is a difference between the 2. Try VCDGear to convert DAT to MPG. It will also fix errors ( and fix errors with MPG to MPG ).
