Thanks to you guys for all the help in setting up my system over the last few days, and i would like to think i have (with your help) ironed out all of the little glitches.
Just one more quick question if i may (deserves only a quick answer too),
i belive i have suceeded in disabling the macrovision between my stand alone dvd player (pacific) and my dvdr70 (philips)but never having owned any type of dvd hardware before, how do i know for sure before i make myself a truck load of coffee coasters by mistake?
By that i mean is there a specific cycle of disturbance on the copied disc (backing up my legit dvds of course)is it every second or so? or even minutes in between?
The dvdr70 instruction manual says an error message should appear if i try to copy protected material and so far so good, as this message has not yet appeared (does this mean i have bypassed the macrovision or do i have to copy a full length title before i find out).
Any feed back would be appreciated (as soon as possible please)

The most obvious sign of Macrovison is the video going from dark to light. Different videos have diferent levels of Macrovision. A lot of video producers reduce the Macrovision levels as people with DVD to TV monitors have problems with the encryption. When a lot of people return the video because it does'nt work on their player, they tend to reduce the level. At least this has been true with VHS tapes. Macrovision, at least as far as I know, reduces the sync pulses in level. This results in dark/light and lose of sync and color.

Retail DVD's also have Digital Copy Protection so you can't copy a DVD to a standalone DVD recorder. Eliminating macrovision is only half the battle.
There are a handfull of DVD players that can be hacked to eliminate both forms of copy protection. There's also a "black box" from Facetvideo that's supposed to work. -

Macrovision is the name of the company that creates the anti-copy schemes. For DVDs, there are two -- Macrovision AGC and Macrovision Colorstripe. Together, they are called "Macrovision 7.0".

Thanks guys, your much needed help is appreciated, cheers for your answers and i must add this is an absolutley excellent site for the inexperienced such as me, to learn and digest relevant information.
As for the two levels of copy protection, the macrovision is the one i was concerned mainly about, due to the fact i would want to backup my old vhs tapes to my new format ,and any new material purchased would be on dvd from now on and from legitimate sources (shop bought) only.
Just one more question if i may and without wanting to double post or ask the same question twice, could i ask you to look at a topic i posted a few days ago entitled "interferance"....sorry but i am a newbie to the internet as well as DVD so dont now how to post a link to it unfortunatley.[/code] -
