Hi.
Could you tell me the standard settings for compressing to divx in virtual dub please?
I want it to be quite a bit smaller than mpeg, but not have crap quality.
So could you tell me what the standard settings people use are please?
Thanks a lot
Ardmanz
PS What is the quickest way to do this? Should I compress to mpg first?

If you want best quality, then you should compress from uncompressed format. Everytime you compress, some of the quality is lost.
The quickest way is to use 1-pass mode in DivX. I assume you use DivX4. Just use the standard settings and you should do fine.
The best quality is achieved by using 2-pass mode, which means that the source video is scanned twice. First time the codec checks what kind of frames there are and it makes a log file. On the second pass it creates the actual video based on that log. It takes twice the time, but the quality is better.
You should try these both with short test video files and judge for yourself. Some say that 2-pass is crap, and others like me think it's very good. So decide for yourself. Be sure to use 32-bit colours, because the quality is much better that way.
more info: go to http://www.doom9.net/ -> the guides ->Divx guides -> DivX4 -> VirtualDub and avisynth -> step 5 encode
this guide tells how to make divx movie from a DVD, but the step 5 describes the 2-pass mode, which is more complicated. Once you can do this, the 1-pass is simple.
Hope this helps.
