    ATI 8500 AIW @ OD For 57.04!!!
Call your local Office Depot. They have the ATI 8500 All in Wonder on clearance for $57.04.

I picked one up today, but they're in very short supply and won't show online. This is only remianing stock in stores.

  2. The card is ok for gaming if you overclock the core and memory timings. Mine has the Samsung 5ns memory chips rated at 200MHZ. The stock clock settings are pretty weak on this unit at 180/225 respectively. As for capture ability, I felt is was a piece of crap, but to each his own. Some claim the firewire port slowed it down, but was caused by the OS used. MS has a patch for the WIN 95/98 OS relating to this problem.

I don't want to scare anyone from the purchase of this card, it is a super deal at this price. Just don't expect this thing to be the wonder that I had when I bought it. It can function quite well when all settings and the input source are of excellent quality. Because of my setbacks using this card, I purchased a DVRex with the breakout box and never looked back after doing so.

If you would like the firmware bios that I use for the overclock I will be more than happy to supply you with it, or you can use some other freeware for the application. I simply set it at the maximum rated speed based on Samsung's web site and never touched it after the flash.

Does Lordsmurf recommend the 8500? I thought it was the 7500 then 9500, but 8000 series was not as good, or was that the low 9000s to not buy.

At that price, I'll certainly jump on one if this is the last gen which was acceptable.

    What say, Lordsmurf?

    Cheers,

    George

  6. Remember Smurf,

the AIW was to be the all around video AND gaming card, not just one or the other in particular order. It presents itself quite well in the gaming department with a few minor adjustments. As for the video, I'll leave that up to each user to evaluate.

Here is a quote from ATI on the AIW products:"Overview

Grab the remote and surf an unprecedented set of TV, DVD, audio and video features. With 128MB DDR memory and an 8-pixel pipeline, ALL-IN-WONDER® 9800 PRO delivers increased rendering power for faster, cinematic quality graphics. Filled with customizable home entertainment features, ALL-IN-WONDER® 9800 PRO is the engine behind cutting-edge gaming, broadcast and PC entertainment."

Please note the cutting edge gaming in the paragraph. This is the same marketing used when the 8500DV was the cutting edge card at the time. Hence the AIW moniker.

    "ALL-IN-WONDER® RADEON™ 8500DV
    Overview
With 64MB of DDR memory, unbelievable graphics, TV and video capture & editing features, the ALL-IN-WONDER® RADEON™ 8500DV is the revolutionary all-in-one 3D graphics and multimedia experience.

    At-a-glance

Yes, should I take this back? I have a Radeon VIVO already, Is this worse, the same, or better for capturing?

If it's worse than my VIVO maybe I'll give it to my girlfriend.

I suggest against the 8500DV one. The 8500 non-DV is fine from the few times I've seen it do its thing. The "DV port" was just a bother to the card (on some systems), bad idea that they soon discontinued.

Most hardware-related trouble questions I get at lordsmurf.com are from users with stubborn 8500DV cards. I doubt it is coincidence.

As far as video games, I think ATI recommends all of its cards as "the card for gaming". And for the moment of production, it was probbly true. All it takes is another new game to make it a lie.

I may go buy one just for fun. I've got a friend that would likely buy it from me later anyhow.

    Thanks, Lordsmurf,

I thought it was either you or the pharoah who liked the 7300(?) and 7500, did advise against the 9000, 9100, 9200(?), and weren't crazy about the 8000 series.

Think I'll keep looking for a price on a 7500, although for 57 bucks, still might get one, can always put it the g'son's 'puter.

    Cheers,

    George

If you're going to buy one, I suggest doing it in a hurry. I wasted an hour calling around Dallas and nobody had any left.

  12. My 8500 is in it's third computer. I keep upgrading my computers but I'm not ready to get rid of my 8500 yet. I'm using MMC 8.7 with the macro hack and lordsmurfs settings and get great mpeg2 captures.

Yeah, he swore by the 7500 (and has some other strange inclinations about the cards)...

... but I really don't see any difference between the 128PRO all the way up to the 9600 or so. I'd use any of them, except the 8500DV. I run two 7200 card, and have family now using a 128PRO, all are on MMC 8.x ... they've all got the same capture chips, and similar tuners.

    Lordsmurf,

Thanks. Good enough for me. If they still have them at my local OD, I'll pick one up.

I like my MSI card, but it doesn't give me an option to cap in .avi. Every mpeg imaginable, but no .avi. Better than my PCTV, which caps everything in .avi, but still....and it's a bitch to edit, tho' Donpedro did tell me how to cap without 1200 scenes that need dragged and dropped.

    Need to try something different.

If they have one here, will have to scour your site.

    Cheers,

    George

  15. The AIW 8500DV and the AIW 8500 have a different graphics processor. The one on the 8500DV is clocked lower and thus slower.
