    Widescreen encode - True or Dare ??

    ** - ** - TWO SCENARIOS TO TRY: - ** - **

    ** source pic is a vdubMOD snap-shot of a re-authored VOB file, then PSP
    ** resized to 852x480, then resized again to 512x288 (to keep image small
    ** and fit w/in this page)

    SCENARIO #1
    -----------
    --> using a 2:35.1 Aspect Ratio

    I dare anyone to create a DVD project from any widescreen source from a VOB
    file and re-mux (vid/aud) and re-author to a DVD disk, and have the EXACT
    Aspect Ratio display on their:

    * Normal 4:3 TV set
    * Widescreen 16:9 TV set

    both yielding the same proper Aspect Ratio !!
    Won't happen.

    SCENARIO #2
    -----------
    --> using a 2:35.1 Aspect Ratio

    Perform either a (Capture or DVD Rip) of any favoriate movie.
    Must be widescreen and aspect ratio of 2:35.1 for this scenario.

    Encode to a 16:9 output (keeping the 2:35.1 AR)

    Results should be:

    * Normal 4:3 TV set - - - - exact AR as your DVD player would play it.
    * Widescreen 16:9 TV set- - exact AR as your DVD player would play it.

    both yielding the same proper Aspect Ratio !!
    Won't happen.

    But, what is happening is this. The tv is cutting off more then 30% of
    the left/right side, and the AR is not 2:35.1, but more like a 1:85.1
    Even if you manage to get your AR thiner to match the 2:35, the left/right
    sides will still be cutt too much.

    Now, either I missed something, OR, somewhere along the authoring part,
    the either important items are being skipped; left out; or stripped out,
    and the result is soiled aspect ratio scope.

    Using my "The Fifth Element DVD"...

    I also tried another route, as an experiment. I took a VOB, and imported
    it into TMPG's MPEG Tools, and de-muxed it to an .m2v and .mp2 source.
    Fed it into a DVD authoring application, and authored to a DVD VOB,
    cretaing the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders.
    I then took the VIDEO_TS folder and copied it exactly into Nero's
    VIDEO_TS folder (just all the files [vobs;bup;ifo], not the FOLDER)
    Then, I burned it in Nero to a +RW disk, and popped it inside my
    Durabrand SSS DVD Player STS75E where it played it beautifully
    smooth w/ no issues I could find :P ..all except for the aspect ratio !!
    It's thick and cuts too much off of the left/right side, though still
    widescreen (on my standard 4:3 tv set) When I pop in my DVD, I got a
    totally different aspect ratio. Was much thinner and ALL left/right sides
    were showing perfectly.
    In the above scenario, I did not encode the video in TMPG. No encoding
    was done. More like a copy to, but w/out all the bells and whistles.

    I do not know what's up w/ this, but I believe that everyone has ben
    short-changed in their Widescreen encodes or conversions.

    So, weather I encode/re-encode a source in TMPG, or basically perform a
    re-mux of a VOB/Audio and then perform an Author to DVD disk, there results
    are poor at best.

    And, before you ask, YES, I've tried all kinds of variations using the
    Video Arrange (I do know how to Widescreen encode) -->
    * Fullscreen
    * Fullscreen (keep aspect Ratio)
    * Fullscreen (keep aspect Ratio2)
    * 16:9 525 line (NTSC)
    * 4:3 525 line (NTSC)
    * Center Customize (720x364) or (720x272) or (720x464) etc etc etc.

    Note, if you can, please U/L a small file, say 10mb so we can see how
    the AR displays on normal tv set. Should be exactly like the DVD itself

    Has anyone performed the above SCENARIOS and got Negative resutls..
    Please explain.
    -------------------------------------------

    Has anyone performed the above SCENARIOS and got Positive resutls..
    Please explain.
    -------------------------------------------

    Does anyone have any reasonable explaination to my errors, using my
    SCENARIOS ??
    please explains.
    -------------------------------------------

    Thanks for your time and understanding,

  2. Have you checked how these 'wrong AR DVD's' look on a software DVD player on your PC, such as WINdvd or PowerDvd.

    Have you tried more than one authoring program?

    @ bugster,

    The pic above is very closely related to the PowerDVD output. It outputs to
    a 960x540. Wide like I would expetect it to be.

    WinDVD unfortunately doesn't have an Aspect Ratio setting as PDVD does.
    So, you get a 1.78 ratio under this app. And, watch out for those normal
    (standard) 16:9 - - you know.. those that are true one.. 1:78.1 ratio. These
    fill the whole widescreen tv set, hence true. WDVD is 1.78 oriented and
    anything highter (ie, 1:85 or 2:35) will be 1.78'ed during view (fullscreen
    or windowed view)

    When you through PDVD, (assuming you have the view setu properly) it will
    view (in normal window view) as a widescreen, giving you the scope or feel
    of widescreen. So, if source is 2:35, it will be 2:35, and not 1.78 as such.

    My guess is that everyone that has done any 1:85 and 2:35 were missing
    the mark and only getting untrue results. I'm here to waik you all up to
    from this
