How Long Does It Take To Burn A DVD ?

im thinking of buying a dvd burner soon, and prices are just about what i can afford right now.
i was wondering how long does it take you to burn a full dvd
on all speeds.

at x 2
at x 4
at x 8 (if you found a media to support that...)

im asking because i have to know if the speed matches the price.
there are 2 dvd writers that im interested in, and i have to choose which one to buy, so any input about them will be also grate.

the 2 burners are :
LG 4040B DVD+R/-R x4 (writes and reads dvd ram too !)
NEC DVD±R 2500A x8

i just dont know which one to choose, the one with the speed (NEC),
or the one with the dvd ram burning capability (LG).
the dvd ram option might be usefull IF i decide to buy a standalone dvd recorder.
but it wont be anytime soon...

Burning speed of 4x is under 15 minutes and 2x is under half an hour.
Caching (as in disc to disc copying) and/or write verification (if chosen) will add to the time.

Don't own 8x but guess it's almost half again. Depends if the writer can write at a constant 8x or just peaks in certain parts of the disc.

Not sure if the cost of the 8x burner and 8x media justify the gain at this time.

My BenQ DW800A will burn a MCC or Ricoh 4x DVD+R in about 8min,starts off at 5.8x then at 35% it kicks into high gear(7.8x) using Nero 5.5.Playback is perfect,I highly recommend this drive.I paid $125USD at www.mwave.com
I have a Optorite DD0203 too but now it's in my closet collecting dust.

You could get a dual format 4x burner for about $100, I would not be so quick to jump on a 8x burner right now because you are going to spend almost double the price of a 4x burner and burning at 8x is only about 4-7 minutes faster than burning at 4x. But as always, the decision is yours.

I did not know that 8x burners had already dropped down that much in price. Well that kind of makes my previous statement of "you are going to spend almost double the price of a 4x burner" bullshit. Well it is good to know that they have come down in price pretty fast, now all we need is a large variety of 8x media to test out.

Alot depends on the Drive in question also.
I have a Pioneer DVR-A04, and even at 2x it takes almost a hour to burn a full disc.
The Pioneer A04 takes an extra long time to close the disc after burning.

Also consider the time it takes to run the MPEG conversion. That will depend heavily on the speed of your PC. On my 2.5GHz P4 it converts only a little faster than realtime using high quality VBR settings. That is, it takes about a hour for an hours worth of DV video.

So if I start with 1 hour of raw DV video, without editing I could have a DVD finished in ~2hrs. Maybe 1:45.
Pioneer DVR-A04 on DVD-R at 2X Using Dazzle DVD Complete.
Pinnacle Studio 8 takes alot longer for me.

Anyway, I guess my point is that there are a lot more variables than just burn speed so YMMV.
