  1. I have a 705mb .avi file. How do I-

    - Convert it into .mpg file?
    - Burn it onto just 1 cd?
    - Burn it in such a way that it plays on my DVD player and other VCD players?

The size of your file isn't relevant but the number of minutes is. TMPGEnc is a good mpeg encoder and you can use it to create a VCD that will fit on one CD. A standard VCD will hold about 80 mins on a CD, if you require more then you can create what is called an XVCD, or non-standard VCD. Most VCD capable DVD players will handle them if you don't stray too far from spec. Here's a guide to fitting a whole movie on one CD. Skip the part about ripping from DVD since you already have an AVI. Once you have your mpeg you can author and burn, look for a guide.

  3. Zippy man, I tried it. I keep getting the "Illegal MPEG stream" message. These are 3 small mpg files that I want to merge, each of about 2.5mb. I changed the file extension to .mpeg and played them individually on WMP and they worked fine. They worked fine without changing the xtension on WMp, mind you. How else can I merge them?

What was the extension to start with? Changing the extension doesn't create a legal mpeg.

Why merge them? If you're burning as an S/VCD then you can drop them all into your authoring program together.

  5. It was .mpg in the beginning.

That's the proper extension, mpeg is just a name for a *.mpg file.

Why are you merging them? And what program are you using?

I ask because if you're creating an S/VCD then you can author them together at the same time, no need to merge.

  9. I just want to create one consolidated file out of several small .mpg clips which come one after the other. The combined size of the clips would not be large enough to merit a seperate CD. It would all come to 'bout 20mb.

I think your mpegs have to be the same resolution and also mpeg type (ie 1 or 2) before you can join them. Look in the "edit" section (over there <-<-) for software links and guides.

  11. YAMRAJ17,

I think there may be some confusion ...

If you simply include all of the MPG files when you author the VCD to a single CD, each file will play one right after the other. You can specifiy a timed pause before the next will play or no pause at all. If you wish you can generate a menu with a slection to each "clip" or no menu at all.

There is no need to "merge" the files, simply include them all on one VCD.

Example w/ NERO -- if you use it.

    1. Open Nero
    2. Select VCD template from the wizard
    3. Go to the MENU tab and make sure that ENABLE MENU is unchecked (unless you want a menu)
    4. Click on NEW button
    5. Select the MPEG files to be included on the VCD.
    6. Arrange them in the order you would like for them to play (by default it is alphabetical)
    7. Burn to Disc
