  1. I load the avi in GSpot and under "video x:y" I can read
    640x272 (2.35:1) [=40:17]
What ratio has my file 16:9 ??

Not sure I understand the question but the aspect ratio appears to be 2.35:1.

AVI's are always always always 1:1 DAR.

Now the aspect ratio is whatever the resolution ration is. Yours is Anamorphic, as opposed to 4:3 or 16:9 . If/When you convert it you have to treat it that way.

  4. ok well I'm a bit confused here..
How can u tell it's Anamorphic and not 16:9 ?

And for this specific avi i can use converting settings = Anamorphic (no borders, encode as 16:9) and it will look ok on a widscreen Tv ?

I use DVD2SVCD when i encode and they have these settings to choose between.

    4:3(No borders,encode as 4:3)
    16:9(borders added,encode as 4:3)
    Anamorphic(no borders,encode as 16:9)

    Thanks for the help...
